Detroit Tigers Assistant GM Resigns Amid Allegations

Sam Menzin steps down before firing over inappropriate conduct allegations involving multiple women.

Sam Menzin, the assistant general manager of the Detroit Tigers, resigned on April 3, 2025, just before the team intended to terminate him due to allegations of inappropriate workplace conduct. According to a report by The Athletic, Menzin, 34, was under investigation for allegedly sending unsolicited lewd photos to multiple women on staff.

The Tigers confirmed that they had completed an investigation into Menzin's conduct, stating, "Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin’s conduct, the club promptly completed an investigation. Before the club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned. This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism."

The allegations reportedly date back to at least 2017, with two women who worked for the Tigers telling The Athletic that Menzin sent them unsolicited photos of his genitals via Snapchat, an app known for automatically deleting images after they are viewed. A third woman, who works in baseball but not for the Tigers, also claimed to have received similar photos from Menzin around 2018-2019.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the women expressed their hesitation to come forward sooner. One woman explained, "It’s like no one says anything, because who is going to believe them when they say Sam Menzin did this? It’s not like a bat boy or security guard. It’s Sam Menzin. It always felt like saying something wasn’t an option, because who is going to believe you and do anything about it?"

Menzin's tenure with the Tigers began in 2012 when he joined as a baseball operations intern under former general manager Dave Dombrowski. He quickly climbed the ranks, becoming the director of baseball operations and pro scouting in 2015, and was promoted to assistant general manager in 2021. His role included overseeing day-to-day operations, player procurement, and compliance with Major League Baseball rules.

Prior to his resignation, Menzin had been seen at the Tigers' spring training in Lakeland, Florida, and was actively involved with the team during the early part of the 2025 season, which had just begun. He worked a full day on April 3, the day he resigned, and interacted with other staff members as usual.

The Tigers were reportedly unaware of the allegations until recently, despite claims that the misconduct had been ongoing for several years. A source indicated that an internal investigation was initiated only after the team received complaints about Menzin’s behavior.

Menzin stated in a text message to The Athletic that he was seeking a career change and moving back to New York to deal with "family issues." However, he did not respond to further inquiries regarding the allegations.

In 2019, Menzin was recognized in The Athletic's "35 under 35" list of promising figures in baseball, highlighting his rapid ascent within the organization. He was also involved in Major League Baseball’s Take The Field program, aimed at helping women gain entry into the sport.

As the Tigers navigate this significant personnel change, they currently hold a record of 5-4 in the early days of the 2025 season. The fallout from Menzin's resignation raises questions about workplace culture within the organization and the steps being taken to ensure a safe environment for all employees.

The Tigers have emphasized their commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace, stating that Menzin's behavior is not reflective of their values. As the investigation concludes and the team moves forward, the organization faces the challenge of restoring trust and confidence among its staff.
