Destiny 2 Unveils Fate Saga With Star Wars Expansion

Bungie reveals new expansions and gameplay innovations for Destiny 2 in upcoming years.

Bungie has officially unveiled the next chapter in the Destiny 2 saga, launching a new era dubbed the "Fate Saga". This upcoming storyline will unfold over multiple years and includes two major expansions set for release in 2025: The Edge of Fate on July 15 and Renegades on December 2. Players can expect a blend of fresh narratives, innovative mechanics, and a unique Star Wars-inspired theme in Renegades.

The reveal came during a livestream event where Bungie showcased a cinematic trailer highlighting the character Orin, who once served as the Queen's Emissary. This expansion will place a significant emphasis on the mysterious group known as The Nine, supernatural beings that have been largely peripheral in the Destiny universe until now.

In a gameplay trailer, Bungie provided glimpses of new weapons, locations, and abilities, including a rocket launcher with ricochet effects and a focus on Darkness abilities. The developers also teased customizable difficulty settings for various locations, enhancing the gameplay experience.

As part of the new content, players will be introduced to Kepler, a tiny planet located in the Oort cloud, which promises to be filled with drama and intrigue related to The Nine. Bungie aims to bring back the mystery that has characterized the Destiny universe, and the narrative will explore the complex relationships and conflicts involving The Nine.

“The Nine are individuals,” Bungie explained during the reveal. “Some have proven evil in the past, but we may find surprising allies among their number.” This statement hints at a rich narrative landscape that players will navigate as they delve deeper into the Fate Saga.

Meanwhile, the expansion Renegades is set to feature a distinct Star Wars flavor, with Bungie stating that it will be “filled with themes and elements drawn from the iconic sci-fi franchise.” Narrative designer Alison Luhrs emphasized that while Renegades will be a unique Destiny experience, it will still be a part of the overarching Fate Saga, introducing new characters and evolving gameplay mechanics.

Players have already had a taste of Star Wars-themed content in Destiny 2, with Stormtrooper costumes and other cosmetics available for purchase. Additionally, the Destiny 2: Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition includes skins for Darth Vader and other Star Wars villains, leading to speculation about how closely Renegades will align with the Star Wars universe.

“Renegades is a one-of-a-kind Destiny experience,” said assistant game director Robbie Stevens. “Just like we on the Destiny team have taken inspiration from other genres like dark fantasy or cosmic horror, Renegades takes the space western vibe and aesthetic that is Star Wars and puts it through that Destiny lens.” This indicates that while the expansion will draw heavily from Star Wars, it will maintain its own identity within the Destiny framework.

The Year of Prophecy will not only feature these two expansions but also includes several major updates. The first of these, titled Ash and Iron, is set to launch on September 9, 2025, and will introduce new gameplay elements and locations, including the return of Destiny 1's Plaguelands.

Furthermore, Bungie has outlined a timeline for future content, with two additional expansions planned for 2026: Shattered Cycle in the summer and The Alchemist in the winter. This structured approach aims to keep players engaged with a steady stream of new content and improvements.

In addition to the expansions, Bungie has promised significant updates to the game's mechanics and systems. Players can expect overhauled armor systems, new world tiers for varying difficulty levels, and a new ability called "Matterspark," which allows players to transform into a rolling ball of destruction. This ability is powered by Dark Matter, the essence of The Nine, and adds an exciting dynamic to gameplay.

As the community anticipates the launch of The Edge of Fate, Bungie has also introduced a prologue event, The Rite of the Nine, available to all players starting today, May 6, 2025. This event reimagines previous dungeons with new twists, serving as a warm-up for the larger narrative arcs to come.

The changes and expansions outlined by Bungie signal a major shift in the Destiny 2 landscape, as the developers aim to revitalize the game experience and engage both new and returning players. With the Fate Saga promising to explore deeper lore and character development, the community is buzzing with excitement for what lies ahead.

As Bungie continues to innovate and expand the Destiny universe, players are left wondering how the intricate storytelling and gameplay mechanics will evolve. The blending of familiar elements with new ideas could redefine the Destiny experience, making it a compelling journey for both veteran players and newcomers alike.
