DeSean Jackson Named Head Coach At Delaware State

The NFL star aims to revitalize the struggling program and build a new culture for the Hornets.

Longtime NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson has officially been appointed as the head coach at Delaware State University, as announced by the institution on Friday. This marks Jackson's first foray as a head coach at any level, taking on a program striving to rejuvenate after years of struggles.

At 38 years old, Jackson, who concluded his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens, expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter. "This opportunity to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my own personal journeys of mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline," Jackson stated, emphasizing his intent to create a new culture at Delaware State. "If we build a healthy culture, we’ll attract the right talent and radically change the program's current course. I cannot wait to get started."

Jackson steps onto the sidelines after Delaware State finished the 2024 season with a disappointing record of 1-11 (0-5 MEAC), resulting in the dismissal of head coach Lee Hull. The Hornets have not experienced a winning season since 2012 when they recorded a 6-5 finish. With Jackson's extensive NFL background, he aims to instill competitiveness and optimism within the team, addressing the foundational aspects of the university's athletics. Athletic director Tony Tucker endorsed Jackson's hiring, declaring him "a perfect fit for our institution" because of his focus on students and competitive spirit.

Jackson’s hiring is part of a broader trend where FCS football programs are bringing on notable former players to drive engagement and improvement, even if they have little to no coaching experience. Notably, Michael Vick, Jackson's former teammate with the Philadelphia Eagles, recently took the head coaching position at Norfolk State, fitting the narrative of former stars seeking coaching opportunities within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Jackson has voiced his long-held dream of coaching at such institutions, symbolizing his commitment to uplifting these programs.

While Jackson's on-field prowess was evident during his 15-season NFL career, including three Pro Bowl selections, it remains to be seen how his playing experience translates to coaching success. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jackson played college football at California before embarking on his NFL career—a diverse background he hopes to use to connect with young athletes.

Before he embarks on this new challenge, Jackson’s NFL statistics speak volumes. Over 183 games, he amassed 641 receptions for 11,263 yards, marking him as one of the prominent wide receivers of his generation, alongside contributions of four rushing touchdowns and four punt return touchdowns throughout his time on multiple teams. The hope is his experience and competitive mindset will translate to success at the collegiate level.

Delaware State’s decision to hire Jackson, along with Vick at Norfolk State, raises questions about the future of FCS coaching, as programs look to leverage the star power of notable former players to revitalize their programs. Jackson's appointment could herald the beginning of change for Delaware State football, with aspirations not just for improvement on the field, but also for fostering talent and camaraderie off it. Jackson said, "If we build together, we can achieve greatness," underlining his vision to reshape Delaware State's football culture.

With excitement brewing among players and fans alike, one can only look forward to what the future holds as DeSean Jackson embarks on his inaugural coaching venture.
