Des Moines Restaurants Shift Locations, Excite Local Diners

New openings and relocations promise diverse dining experiences for residents across the city.

Des Moines is experiencing a notable transformation in its culinary scene as several restaurants either change locations or open brand-new establishments, much to the delight of local residents and food enthusiasts.

One prominent addition to the Des Moines dining scene is the upcoming opening of the new Chick-fil-A on 86th Street, slated for next month. This fast-food giant, known for its chicken sandwiches and remarkable customer service, has been much anticipated by residents, especially as the location will replace the former subway shop, which was often criticized for lackluster offerings. According to reports from the Des Moines Register, many community members expressed excitement on social media about this new transition.

On the other hand, as some restaurants are making their debut, others are experiencing significant movements. Pancheros Mexican Grill, beloved for its fresh ingredients and customizable burritos, will relocate to the East Village, promising to offer their unique menu to new customers. The original site was part of the old shopping complex, and the new location is expected to attract more foot traffic and younger clientele, enhancing the area's vibrant atmosphere.

“We’re thrilled about the move,” said the manager of Pancheros, Maria Martinez. “This new location is not only bigger but also closer to many events and gatherings happening downtown, which will help us serve even more customers.”

Meanwhile, nearby, another beloved spot, Fong’s Pizza, which combines traditional Chinese flavors with classic Italian pizza, has announced plans to renovate and relocate their existing restaurant nearby. Known for their quirky atmosphere and signature dishes, such as the Crab Rangoon pizza, they aim to modernize their space to accommodate growing demand.

“The renovations will allow us to expand our seating and kitchen space,” noted co-owner Jason Fong. “We believe this will greatly improve the dining experience our customers have come to love.”

Across the city, there are also whispers about the potential return of Jethro's BBQ, which had several locations throughout Des Moines but closed its last one some months ago. Community members are eager for the brand's return, especially fond of its well-known Jethro's Jumbo Sandwich. An insider has suggested the possibility of revitalization efforts which may involve new ownership and management.

While existing restaurants are busy with their relocations and renovations, new eateries are also sprouting up like wildfire. Bitterness Brewery, which combines craft beer with gourmet food, is expected to launch its doors on Locust Street shortly, attracting not just beer lovers but those seeking unique culinary experiences as well. Local buzz suggests their signature dishes include beer-braised short ribs and various artisanal pizzas, all paired with creative craft brews.

“This area needed something fresh and innovative,” said local food blogger Emily Hawkes, who is following this change closely. “Bitterness Brewery seems to be providing just the right mix of both worlds—amazing food and fantastic beers.”

Similarly, the re-opening of Formaro’s Italian Grill after undergoing renovations adds another exciting chapter to Des Moines’ food narrative. Previously located on 5th Avenue, they have announced their new site would focus more on family dining with reimagined classic dishes.

“Our vision is to create not only delicious food but also special moments for families and friends,” the owner, Thomas Formaro, stated. “Des Moines deserves it.”

The changes occurring within Des Moines aren’t just revolving around the restaurants themselves but also highlight the city's growth as a dining hub. Local officials note how these developments create new job opportunities and bolster the economy.

“Every new restaurant is an opportunity for residents. It’s jobs, improved diversity of offerings, and economic growth,” commented city council member Lisa Hagan. “It’s exciting to see entrepreneurship thriving.”

With the local food scene continuing its evolution, many are eagerly waiting to welcome all the newcomers and see how familiar favorites adapt to their new homes. Residents look forward to sampling offerings at the upcoming venues and supporting the community’s drive for diverse, quality dining options.

Des Moines is certainly at the cusp of something delicious!
