Denzel Washington Shines As Macrinus In Gladiator II

With over $400 million at the box office, Washington reflects on his career and future projects as he embraces new talent.

Denzel Washington, the two-time Oscar winner, commands attention as he steps back onto the screen, this time as the enigmatic Macrinus in Ridley Scott's much-anticipated 'Gladiator II'. With over $400 million already grossed, this sequel is proving to be worthy of its predecessor's legacy.

Now approaching his 70th birthday on December 28, Washington is redefining his career. He is not just stepping back to past roles but is pushing boundaries by embracing complex characters and nurturing the next generation of talents. "I’ve been on a two-year program to get healthier. At the Academy Awards, I looked at myself and thought, ‘I’ve got to change,’" Washington shared during his candid conversation with Variety. His commitment to health, guided by trainer Doug Romero, reflects his desire to not only feel active but also align his physical fitness with the demands of the industry.

Returning to the epic narrative set against the backdrop of ancient Rome, Washington's portrayal of Macrinus—a former slave clawing for power—is one of the film's highlights. His collaboration with Scott, whom he previously worked with on 'American Gangster', reinvigorates their creative chemistry. The veteran actor emphasizes, "Ridley talks about casting being 80% of the job... Their energy is infectious. I see my job as recognizing young talent and passing the baton." This philosophy shines through his interactions with rising stars like Paul Mescal and Fred Hechinger, adding new layers to the film.

Washington didn’t shy away from the competition either. With the original 'Gladiator' having grossed $465.2 million globally, the pressure to meet such heights is palpable. The sequel, benefitting from its star-studded ensemble and Washington's gravitas, has already made strides to carve its own niche. By Dec. 20, it is anticipated to leap even higher on the charts as it surpasses other major releases.

There’s also excitement brewing around Washington’s future collaborations, including another film with Spike Lee, titled 'High and Low Man'. He expressed his trust and enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Spike is cooking up something special... I’ll be watching the cut soon. He’s a visionary, and I trust him completely." Even whispers of potential collaboration with Ryan Coogler over 'Black Panther 3' have sparked curiosity, showcasing Washington’s continued relevance and appeal.

The music behind 'Gladiator II' adds another layer of depth to the film. Harry Gregson-Williams has taken on the formidable task of discerning Hans Zimmer's iconic 2000 score. "There was plenty of pressure, mostly self-imposed," he stated, recalling how Zimmer showed support throughout the creative process. Excitedly, he noted, "His face appeared up above the orchestra... He was bursting with pride.” With its inclusion on the Oscars shortlist for best original score, the soundtrack elevates the film's standing among its peers.

Washington’s gaze may linger on the impactful legacy he has built over the years, reflecting on the challenges faced as one of the most decorated Black actors. Yet he remains future-focused, declaring, "I’m not retiring tomorrow, but at some point, it’ll be my last one. Until then, I’m working with incredible directors and telling stories matter." Such steady resolve coupled with the growth of his family—especially with his son Malcolm Washington stepping onto the directorial stage—reinforces Washington’s renewed appreciation for simplicity and family values. "Watching my family grow — it’s the greatest reward," he said, hinting at his soulmate moments away from the camera.

Denzel Washington’s evolution is epitomized by his latest project, illuminating how he drives forward not only as a star but as a mentor. He undergoes training, embraces newfound health, and balances family priorities, simultaneously making room for collaborations with budding talent. The narrative of 'Gladiator II' may still be unfurling, but so is the next chapter for Washington, who remains steadfastly committed to his craft and the stories worth telling.
