Denzel Washington Becomes Minister After Baptism Ceremony

The actor embraces his faith publicly just before turning 70 with ceremony at Harlem church.

Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington officially became a minister during a baptism ceremony held at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, located in Harlem, New York City, on Saturday. This momentous event, which was livestreamed on Facebook, coincides with Washington's upcoming 70th birthday, set for December 28.

“It took a long time, but I’m finally here,” Washington remarked during the ceremony. “If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.” These statements reflect both the personal significance of his baptism and his commitment to his faith.

Washington's baptism was officiated by Archbishop Christopher Bryant, who shared photos and affirmations of the event on social media. “We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington to the clergy, having received his minister’s license today,” Bryant wrote, noting the uplifting atmosphere of the ceremony. Washington, dressed in white robes, was immersed in the church’s ritual pool, symbolizing his commitment to his new role.

This baptism is rooted deeply in Washington’s personal history; he attended the Kelly Temple as a child and has expressed strong connections to the church community throughout his life. Archbishop Bryant highlighted this background, stating, “He testified to being filled with the Holy Spirit after visiting another church.” Washington’s childhood experiences have undeniably shaped his faith and his recent decision to become more publicly active within the church.

Joining him at the ceremony was his wife, Pauletta Washington, who expressed her pride during the service. “Forty-six years later, here I’m still standing next to him as only God will have it,” she said, emphasizing the strong foundation and example Washington has set for their adult children.

Washington's faith has also been articulated through recent interviews, where he has candidly described the challenges of discussing religion within the Hollywood scene. He noted, “It’s not fashionable, it’s not sexy,” but he assured his audience, “It doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.” He emphasized how difficult it often is to remain open about spirituality and faith, stating, “You can’t talk like this and win Oscars. You can’t say it and party. You can’t say it in this town.” Washington’s statement acknowledges the pressures faced by actors to conform to certain industry norms, even as many maintain deep-seated beliefs.

Reflecting on his personal faith, Washington shared how pivotal moments throughout his life have led him to this point. He recalled being prophesied to by Ruth Green when he was just 20 years old, who told him, “Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people.” This moment marked the beginning of his awareness and acceptance of his path as someone destined to inspire others through his faith.

Such reflections continued as Washington stated his commitment to uplift God through his work and life: “It’s my job to lift God up, to give Him praise.” Washington’s passion for his faith resonates not only through his words but also through his actions as he officially enters ministry.

During the ceremony, he expressed gratitude for his life experiences and the support he has received, adding, “To God be the glory. Hallelujah!” His heartfelt gratitude aligned with the joyous atmosphere of the celebration, which brought together friends and family to witness his commitment.

The significance of this baptism extends beyond Washington himself; it speaks to the experiences of many who grapple with faith and their public persona. Washington’s commitment to his faith marks not only personal growth but potentially inspires many who feel similarly isolated within their beliefs.

Following the ceremony, Washington was ready for new opportunities as he embarks on the next chapter of his life. With his upcoming film, Gladiator II, prompting expectations of receiving award nominations, he is simultaneously grounding his professional accolades within his religious convictions. Washington revealed how this duality shapes his career outlook and personal faith, demonstrating how they intertwine.

Through expressing gratitude and humility during his baptism, Washington emphasizes the importance of faith as he steps forward as both a prominent figure on screen and now, as Minister Denzel Washington, committed to serving God and inspiring others within his community and beyond.

It remains to be seen how Washington’s new role will influence his work and interactions within Hollywood, but his commitment to faith will undoubtedly shape his future endeavors and contributions to the conversation around spirituality and identity.
