Deniliquin Rams Reveal 2025 Leadership Group

Mick Barnett returns as captain, backed by strong young vice captains for the upcoming season.

The Deniliquin Rams have officially named their leadership group for the senior football side as they prepare for the 2025 season. This announcement marks a significant moment for the club as they look to steady the ship after the departure of several key players.

Among the notable losses, Ricky Gittens, Jack Tyndall, Bryce Scoullar, Lachie MacDonald, and Brayden Hall have all signed with Tocumwal for the upcoming season. While these departures are sizable, the Rams are buoyed by their exciting young core, eager to make its mark.

Leading this promising group will be club-native Mick Barnett, who takes over as captain. Barnett has returned to the Rams after spending two years with Thomson in the Geelong and District Football League. Known for his consistent performance as a defender, or as he is affectionately known, ‘Sugar,’ Barnett is not only dependable on the field but also serves as a role model for his teammates, setting high standards for the club’s younger players.

Barnett will be supported by three vice captains: Cable Fitzpatrick, Harry Hillier, and Will Henderson. Fitzpatrick, who has established himself on the wing and halfback for the Rams, was recognized as the senior group’s most consistent player during the 2024 season. Having seamlessly transitioned to senior-level football three years ago, he is another player the club believes will demonstrate excellent leadership.

Next is Will Henderson, a versatile midfielder capable of playing as a forward. Although the 2024 season was challenging for him due to limited game time, being appointed as a leader demonstrates his potential. And then there’s Harry Hillier, another dedicated clubman who lent his experience as last year’s fourths coach. Hillier's physical presence as a strong-bodied ruckman adds flexibility to the Rams’ lineup.

Gary Parsons, one of the senior coaches, expressed enthusiasm about the new leadership group, highlighting their local roots and commendable qualities. "It is just great to see young people at the club, from Deni, who are really good local people," Parsons said.

The decision-making process for selecting this leadership group involved evaluating not just their football skills, but their personal character as well. Parsons emphasized the significance of setting positive examples for teammates and junior players. He asked pertinent questions like: “Does he set an example for his teammates and the junior players at the club? Is he willing to help out around the club? Does he want to be at the club?” According to Parsons, the answers were overwhelmingly positive.

“All four being, at least, second-generation players is nice, and they are all really good people too,” Parsons added, indicating the mentoring role these leaders will play for younger teammates.

With aspirations to build on their success through investing in local talent, the Deniliquin Rams look forward to the 2025 season under the guidance of their new leadership group. Enhancing the development of younger players is at the forefront of their strategy, and having leaders who are deeply connected to the club reinforces this mission. The 2025 season promises to be one of growth and opportunity for the Rams.
