Delhi Capitals Opt To Bowl First Against Gujarat Giants

Meg Lanning cites bowling trends as key reason for decision as teams seek redemption.

Bengaluru, February 25 (IANS) - The Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to field first against Gujarat Giants during their Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Tuesday. Captain Meg Lanning of Delhi emphasized her decision to bowl first, taking note of the current trend favoring teams batting second. Notably, Titas Sadhu replaced Arundhati Reddy in the lineup.

“Going to have a bowl. Seems to be the trend. It gives our bowlers a good chance to pick up early wickets upfront. One change – Titas come in for Reddy. We just think that's the best XI for us to get the win tonight. Titas has been bowling extremely well in the nets. Always areas to improve – whether you win or lose,” Lanning stated at the toss.

On the other side, Gujarat Giants made two changes to their playing squad. Their captain, Ashleigh Gardner, spoke about the importance of adaptability for this match, especially since the team's previous outings had been very close together. “Been a nice week to reset. We played three games very quickly, so we had the chance to recharge the batteries and have a good block of training too. We obviously know Bangalore's going to be different from Vadodara. There's a lot more bounce at this venue. It's about being able to adapt quickly. Two changes – Phoebe Litchfield and also Meghna Singh,” Gardner remarked.

The teams took the field with Delhi Capitals featuring: Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland, Jess Jonassen, Sarah Bryce (wk), Niki Prasad, Shikha Pandey, Titas Sadhu, and Minnu Mani. Meanwhile, Gujarat Giants lined up with Beth Mooney (wk), Harleen Deol, Phoebe Litchfield, Ashleigh Gardner (c), Deandra Dottin, Simran Shaikh, Tanuja Kanwar, Bharti Fulmali, Kashvee Gautam, Meghna Singh, and Priya Mishra.

This matchup is significant for both teams, each seeking to rebound from recent defeats. Delhi is coming off a 33-run loss to UP Warriorz, and Gujarat also faced defeat, losing to Mumbai Indians by five wickets. The stakes are heightened as both squads look to establish momentum moving forward.

Fans can catch the match live, as it will be broadcast on Star Sports Network and live-streamed through the JioHotstar app and website.

With the blend of outstanding players on both teams, this match promises exhilarating action and strategic play. Both captains remain optimistic about their game plans, hoping to leverage the conditions at Bengaluru for success.

The match not only highlights the excitement of the Women's Premier League but also emphasizes the growing popularity and competitiveness of women's cricket as it garners increasing attention.
