Delhi Capitals Clinch Playoff Spot With Dominant Win Over RCB

Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen's brilliant performances lead DC to victory, as RCB continues to struggle.

Delhi Capitals secured their place in the playoffs of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 with a commanding victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Saturday, triumphing by 9 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

This marked RCB's fourth consecutive loss, putting their hopes for playoff qualification increasingly at risk.

Batting first, RCB managed to post a total of 147 runs, thanks to Ellyse Perry's resilient knock of 60 runs from 47 balls, which included three sixes and three fours. After losing their captain Smriti Mandhana early, the RCB innings struggled at first, with key contributions from Perry and Raghavi Bist, who scored 33 runs off 32 deliveries.

Despite the early setbacks, Perry teamed up with Bist, forming partnerships to stabilize the innings as they looked to set the team up for a defendable target. RCB finished their innings at 147 for 5, setting the stage for DC's response.

What followed was sheer dominance displayed by the Delhi Capitals. Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen shined brightly, with Verma smashing 80 runs off just 43 balls, hitting eight boundaries and four sixes. Jonassen supported her expeditiously with 61 runs off 38 balls. Together, they formed the second-largest partnership in WPL history, taking their team to victory without any other significant hiccups.

Though Delhi's captain Meg Lanning fell cheaply for just 2 runs, Verma and Jonassen's stellar partnership ensured the team chased down the target with 27 balls to spare. This victory not only secured Delhi's spot in the playoffs but also marked their third straight win, leading them to the top of the points table.

"With this win, we have qualified for the playoffs, and it's exciting to see our hard work paying off," remarked Verma post-match, reflecting on the team's stellar performance.

From the outset, RCB faced challenges when Lanning's early departure set the tone for the innings. The team struggled against Delhi's bowling attack, with Shikha Pandey and debutante Nallapureddy Charani claiming two wickets each. Their contributions were key to limiting RCB’s scoring opportunities throughout the match.

Delhi Capitals have had quite the turnaround this season, winning five out of seven matches, which puts them firmly at the top with 10 points and ensures they are the first team to enter the playoffs. Where they won the previous match against RCB by just the margin of victory, they have now firmly established themselves as one of the title contenders.

Reflecting overall on the tournament's performance, Perry's consistent runs have made her the highest run-scorer this year with 295 runs, averaging 98.33 across six matches, showcasing her prowess as one of the tournament's standout players.

Looking at the points table, the Delhi Capitals lead with 10 points, followed by Mumbai Indians with 6, and Uttar Pradesh Warriors also at 4 points, battling closely with RCB, who now sit at the fourth position with only 4 points to their name.

RCB's next match on March 7 against Gujarat Giants will be significant, as they try to claw their way back up the table. With the playoffs drawing close, every match becomes increasingly pivotal.

Overall, the latest outing confirmed Delhi Capitals' formidable form this season, raising hopes among their fans as they aim for the WPL championship.
