Defender Of The Fatherland Day Celebrated With National Honor

Events across Russia highlight military contributions and honor veterans and servicemen.

Across Russia, Defender of the Fatherland Day, observed on February 23, was marked with various events aimed at honoring military personnel and veterans who have served the nation. Initiatives included motivational lessons with participants from special operations, the campaign "Warmth for the Hero," and programs dedicated to fighters and veterans of military actions.

Students from the military center at the Tambov State University prepared vitamin teas, honey-nut packages, and dry soups to be sent to soldiers via the sanitary train passing through Tambov. The event featured the participation of Yuri Kozlov, a veteran of the Special Military Operation (SMO), and Tamara Zaguzova, deputy of the Tambov city council. During the event, around 100 vitamin mixtures with honey, 1,000 tea sets, and approximately 200 dry soups were crafted.

Meanwhile, in Yaroslavl, young people and local deputies met with Julia Mikhailova, secretary of the DNR representation in Moscow, the first woman from the DNR to serve in the Russian army, Anna Ilyasova, and actor Vladislav Demyin. They shared personal stories and responded to inquiries. Ilyasova recounted her experience, stating, "I was born in the village of Staromikhailovka in Donbass, where throughout the years our village has been on the frontline, under fire. Many friends have died, leaving numerous families shattered. Just days before the start of the SMO, I submitted my documents, expressing the desire to be alongside the guys. I wanted to do something useful for my Homeland. I am often asked: if I could go back, would I make the same choice again? Yes!".

Celebrations continued in Chelyabinsk, where local figures like State Duma deputy Oleg Golikov and former general Vladimir Koryagin congratulated defenders during the event, where patriotic songs were performed by artistic groups for the soldiers. Ural saw similar festivities, featuring concerts and quizzes for veterans and combatants.

Across the country, actions included the "Field Mail" project, where participants could write warm messages to the defenders. This included notable heroes from previous wars, such as veterans of World War II, Afghanistan, and Chechnya.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin reiterated the significance of the holiday, distancing it from those he described as having "abandoned Russia at challenging times". He declared, "The challenges we face as a country have revealed who stands with us and who chooses to retreat from their duties. Today’s holiday celebrates those who love Russia and are ready to stand for their country when it matters." Volodin emphasized honoring participants of the military operations and their families, indicating the enduring spirit of patriotism during these difficult times.

President Vladimir Putin congratulated servicemen, proclaiming them the main heroes of Defender of the Fatherland Day. He acknowledged their hardships and expressed gratitude for their perseverance: "We all understand how difficult it is for you, and we admire your spirit and determination to triumph. Thank you for your honorable and impeccable service to our homeland and people." He also reaffirmed the strategic goals to strengthen and develop the armed forces, stating it is imperative to meet the actual needs of the troops engaged in operations.

At events such as the solemn flower-laying ceremony at the ‘City of Military Glory’ stele in Tver, notable attendees included senators and local officials. Tver’s Governor Igor Rudenya expressed collective gratitude to all generations of warriors, who have fought for the nation’s integrity and freedom. He celebrated the present-day servicemen, acknowledging their role as heirs to heroic traditions.

Educational institutions, like the Military Academy of Aerospace Defense, participated actively, showcasing the enthusiasm of the youth to connect their lives with service. "I have wanted to dedicate my life to the Armed Forces since childhood, as my family has military ties through four generations. This holiday is immensely significant to us," shared one cadet.

On the eve of Defender of the Fatherland Day, Governor Igor Rudenya awarded state and regional medals to various residents, including veterans from the Great Patriotic War, honoring their sacrifices with special recognition for their historical contributions.

These celebratory actions, diverse across regions, underscored the solemn reverence associated with Defender of the Fatherland Day. The acknowledgment of military personnel, both current and past, demonstrates Russia's commitment to its defenders, as the nation unites to honor their bravery and dedication.
