DeepSeek Chatbot Exposes Sensitive User Data

Data breaches and security vulnerabilities are becoming alarmingly common in the rapidly advancing world of artificial intelligence. The latest incident involves the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek, which has come under scrutiny after it exposed sensitive user data due to significant security flaws.

Researchers from Wiz Research recently reported finding a publicly accessible ClickHouse database belonging to the DeepSeek company, which the startup had left completely open without any authentication. According to Wiz Research, this oversight led to the exposure of more than one million lines of log entries, which included sensitive information such as chat history, API secrets, and operational details. "Within minutes, we found [the database] completely open and unauthenticated, exposing sensitive data," the researchers stated.

This breach has attracted serious attention from authorities, with DeepSeek now facing investigations for privacy and national security concerns within both Europe and the United States. The app, which had attained coveted status as the top application on Apple’s App Store, was removed from the Italian market after concerns from the country’s privacy watchdog about its lack of secure handling of user data.

DeepSeek's vulnerabilities not only highlight the company's lax approach to data security but also raise questions about how AI chatbots handle user privacy and the potential for misuse of information. Analysts are pointing fingers at insufficient security measures implemented by DeepSeek and the risks posed by its ties to Chinese governmental controls. Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of AI search platform Perplexity, attempted to assuage fears by ensuring users, "None of your data goes to China," outlining their efforts to host DeepSeek models within US and EU data centers. Perplexity enables users to perform AI queries with the model without sending their data to Chinese servers, which theoretically enhances user privacy.

For users opting to download DeepSeek's open-source R1 model directly and run it locally, there is still another layer of complexity. While this method avoids concerns over data transmission to Chinese servers, it remains troubled by inherent censorship instilled within the model based on the Chinese government's regulations. A Perplexity representative noted the existence of residual censorship, claiming to have removed some weights intended to enforce these restrictions. Yet, when tested, the model continued to deliver biased responses concerning sensitive subjects. When asked to provide information about Tiananmen Square, the model completely refused to answer.

Another platform utilizing DeepSeek, You.com, also confirmed it values user privacy and hosts its models on American servers. Co-founder Bryan McCann explained variations observed in the models' responses based on whether public web sources were incorporated, hinting at the influence of the data environment on the outputs of AI systems.
