Deco And Laprovittola Reflect On Barcelona's Future

Key players share insights on team dynamics and personal journeys as they look forward to upcoming challenges.

After closing the winter transfer market, FC Barcelona’s sporting director Deco took some time to evaluate the club's recent decisions and future ambitions. Speaking from his office at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Deco expressed satisfaction with the team's progress and highlighted the importance of retaining key players, such as Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo.

"You can't have a player who isn’t happy. It becomes a problem for the team," Deco stated, referring to the delicate balance of team dynamics. He revealed his conversations with Araujo, assuring him of his significance to the club and expressing confidence about his long-term commitment. "If in the future he needs to communicate something, the door is open. But I don't think he wants to leave—I believe he will stay for many years," Deco added.

The focus now shifts to young talent Lamine Yamal, who will turn 18 this July. Deco is enthusiastic about Yamal’s future at Barcelona, declaring him indispensable. "There are key players, and he is one of them. There’s no discussion, there’s no price tag. We’ve had no offers because we haven’t wanted to talk about it. He will likely be at Barça for many years, just like Pedri and Gavi," he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Deco is aware of the challenges the club faces financially, particularly when compared to clubs like Manchester City, who recently spent over 200 million euros. "We can’t afford such expenditures right now, but we don’t need to bring three or four new players. The renewal process has already happened, and our young talents have solidified their places," he remarked.

Despite the club's strong performance this season, Deco remains cautious about declaring Barcelona as favorites for the UEFA Champions League, stating, "I don’t think we can claim to be the favorites. To be favorites you need to consistently reach quarter-finals and semi-finals, which hasn’t been the case. We need to take steps forward. No matter how much excitement there is and how well we are playing, Barça isn’t the favorite this year."

Turning the spotlight to injuries and resilience, Nicolás Laprovittola, who sustained a severe knee injury during the October 20 match against Baskonia, spoke about his difficult recovery process. Over three months have passed since the injury, which is identified as a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and damage to the meniscus of his right knee.

Currently managing his recovery efforts from his café, Laprovittola shares his determination to return to the court, declaring, "I received a very complicated, long-lasting injury, but I feel mature and prepared to handle it. I’m still eager to continue playing." His dedication reflects the competitive spirit expected of Barcelona players.

With FC Barcelona gearing up for the Copa del Rey, Laprovittola acknowledged the importance of this upcoming tournament, noting, "This weekend will be decisive for the season. This year, everything is black or white; it’s hard to find regularity. The Cup can give us great momentum." The club is set to face La Laguna Tenerife, perceived as manageable opponents for the quarter-finals.

He commented on the significance of competing with energy, emphasizing, "What needs to happen is to play with energy, considering what it means to be part of Barça. That’s something I’ve always done on the court, putting the club first above all else." Laprovittola's absence is felt strongly by the team, and head coach Peñarroya is still searching for ways to fill the gap left by his injury.

Despite Raul Neto’s departure and Thomas Heurtel’s incomplete return, Laprovittola's absence has opened pathways for other players. Metu now leads scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game, Parker is pulling the most rebounds with 4.3, and Satoransky is topping assists with 4.6.

Even though Laprovittola has not experienced injury problems before, he remains optimistic about his situation. He expressed immense gratitude for the support he has received during his recovery, recognizing the privilege of being part of such a prestigious club: "I want to live here and appreciate all the gestures of support I’ve received throughout this process where I’ve had to start from scratch."

Both Deco and Laprovittola share perspectives on resilience and commitment to FC Barcelona, as they look toward the future with optimism—even amid challenges. Their messages reflect the tenacity and dedication synonymous with the club's philosophy, inspiring both fans and teammates.
