Deadline Approaches For High School Registration In Mexico

Students must register online by April 15 to secure places in upper secondary education.

The deadline for high school registration in Mexico City and the State of Mexico through the "Mi derecho, mi lugar" program is set for Tuesday, April 15, 2025. This initiative, championed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aims to guarantee secondary school students a place in upper secondary education institutions.

Registration must be completed online, requiring students to have internet access. The program allows applicants to register for free and create two preference lists of educational options, enhancing their chances of securing a spot in a desired school.

Participating institutions include several prominent educational bodies such as Colegio de Bachilleres (Colbach), Dirección General de Bachillerato (DGB), Colegio Nacional de Educación Profesional Técnica (Conalep), DGETI, DGETAyCM, SECTI CDMX, Instituto de Educación Media Superior de la Ciudad de México (IEMS), and Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMEX).

For students aiming to enter the prestigious Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), specific requirements must be met. These include maintaining a minimum grade point average of 7, providing a payment slip for cost recovery, passing an admission exam, and being selected as an applicant.

Importantly, the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has warned students about the existence of fraudulent websites that mimic the official registration site but use .com or .org extensions. To ensure validity, students must access the registration portal at www.miderechomilugar.gob.mx, which has a .mx domain.

To successfully register for "Mi derecho, mi lugar," students must gather several documents, including their CURP, proof of address, telephone number, email, and a digital copy of their secondary school certificate. For those encountering difficulties, assistance is available at the Pilares of CDMX or the Orientation Centers in the State of Mexico.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as the deadline looms just hours away, leaving many students racing against time to complete their registrations. This program is particularly vital for students in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM), where the demand for high school placements is high.

In a related development, the SEP reiterated that all upper secondary education applicants in the ZMVM must register in "Mi derecho, mi lugar" to participate in the Assignment Process for this academic year. This initiative is crucial for ensuring that students have a pathway to continue their education without the traditional hurdles of entrance exams.

According to the SEP, the registration process is entirely free and can only be conducted through the official platform, which is designed to streamline the assignment of students to schools. The registration allows students to select institutions that do not require a selection exam, as well as those that do.

Students can create two lists of up to ten different educational institutions, enabling them to participate in the assignment processes according to their preferences. The institutions offering direct access without an exam include Colegio De Bachilleres (Colbach), Colegio Nacional De Educación Profesional Técnica (Conalep), Instituto De Educación Media Superior De La Ciudad De México (IEMS), and others.

For schools requiring an entrance exam, such as UNAM and IPN, students must meet specific criteria to be considered for admission. The registration period opened on March 18, 2025, and will close on April 15, leaving applicants with a narrow window to secure their places.

In an effort to combat misinformation, the SEP has cautioned students against engaging with unofficial sites that may offer dubious services or courses for admission. The SEP clarified that they do not endorse any preparatory courses for the entrance exams, which are strictly aligned with the official curriculum.

Additionally, the SECTI announced an extension of the registration period for new entrants for the 2025-2026 academic cycle at the high school level in 103 municipalities of Mexico. Applicants to state public schools will now have until Wednesday, April 16, 2025, to upload their data to the designated platform. This extension allows more students to participate in the registration process.

However, applicants to state schools can only select institutions within the state system and cannot choose from other well-known schools like Colegio de Bachilleres or UNAM. The participating institutions include Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico (CBT), Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos del Estado de México (CECYTEM), and others.

For the first time, students will not be required to take an admission exam to enter the state public high school system. Instead, assignments will be made randomly based on available spaces at each institution. This change aims to simplify the process and increase accessibility for students across the region.

To complete the registration, applicants must provide their CURP, birth certificate, proof of address, and other relevant documents. They will also need to choose between six to ten school options and provide contact information. The results of the assignment will be announced on August 4, 2025, via the same registration website.

As the deadline approaches, students and their families are encouraged to ensure all documentation is in order and to access the official registration site to avoid any complications. This initiative not only represents a vital opportunity for students to further their education but also reflects the ongoing efforts of the Mexican government to enhance access to quality education.
