Deadline Approaches For 2024 PIT Tax Returns In Poland

Taxpayers urged to finalize submissions before April 30 deadline to avoid penalties and maximize benefits.

As the clock ticks down to the April 30, 2025 deadline for submitting PIT tax returns for the year 2024, the Polish Ministry of Finance is reminding taxpayers to take action. In a post on the platform X, officials urged individuals to log in to the Twój e-PIT service, review their tax declarations, and make any necessary adjustments or claim applicable tax reliefs before the final day.

Piotr Juszczyk, Chief Tax Advisor at inFakt, explained that starting on April 30, 2025, the Twój e-PIT system will automatically approve tax returns for those who have not submitted or accepted their PIT forms. This automatic approval primarily applies to individuals employed under employment contracts or service contracts, making it easier for many to meet their tax obligations.

However, it is important to note that this automatic process does not extend to entrepreneurs or individuals needing to report the sale of real estate. For these cases, failing to submit a return by the deadline could lead to penalties, such as fines.

Juszczyk emphasized the importance of the April 30 deadline, stating, "While tax reliefs can still be settled after this date through a correction, the opportunity to donate 1.5% of one’s tax to a public benefit organization is lost after April 30." In 2024, Polish taxpayers generously donated a remarkable 1.9 billion PLN to various public benefit organizations, highlighting the impact of these contributions.

For those looking to file their PIT online, the Ministry of Finance has provided clear instructions. Taxpayers can access the e-Tax Office through the login.gov.pl platform using a Trusted Profile (PZ), e-ID, online banking, or the mObywatel application. This service is designed to be user-friendly, allowing individuals to manage their tax affairs conveniently.

The e-Tax Office offers a range of e-services, including the ability to check previous settlements, verify the status of tax refunds, and pay taxes online via bank transfer or BLIK. The Rozliczenia service is also available, assisting entrepreneurs in correctly completing the PIT-36 form and tracking their tax refund status.

Taxpayers have until the end of April to verify and modify or approve their settlements in the Twój e-PIT service. After April 30, the National Tax Administration (KAS) will automatically accept PIT-37 and PIT-38 returns. However, returns such as PIT-28, PIT-36, and PIT-36L will not be automatically approved, requiring taxpayers to complete and accept these forms themselves.

Automatic acceptance of PIT-37 and PIT-38 returns is set to commence at midnight on May 1, 2025, and is expected to last until May 8, 2025. During this period, the Twój e-PIT service will not be accessible, but once completed, taxpayers will have access to their returns and can download the Official Receipt Confirmation (UPO). They will also have the option to submit corrections to their returns.

For those who prefer traditional methods, tax returns can also be submitted using online forms that allow representatives to file declarations on behalf of clients. These online forms are available on the e-Tax Office website without requiring a login. Additionally, taxpayers can fill out paper returns and submit them by mail or directly at the tax office, with the postmark date determining the submission's timeliness.

Taxpayers who file electronically, including those using the Twój e-PIT service, can expect to receive their tax refunds within 45 days. In contrast, those who submit paper returns may wait up to three months for their refunds.

For individuals facing tax payments, the Twój e-PIT service provides information about their tax micro-account, facilitating convenient online payments through BLIK or credit cards. It is crucial for taxpayers to settle any tax due from their PIT returns by April 30. If a return requiring payment is automatically accepted in the Twój e-PIT service, the tax office will notify the taxpayer of the amount due within a month of the return's acceptance on April 30, 2025. Taxpayers should then pay the tax within seven days of receiving this notification.

Support is readily available for taxpayers who have questions about the filing process. They can call the KAS national hotline at (+48) 22 330 03 30, where tax office employees can provide secure assistance, even for individual matters covered by tax confidentiality. To ensure data protection, a special individual telePIN can be quickly set up in the e-Tax Office.

It is also important to note that due to an order from the Prime Minister, tax offices will be closed on May 2, 2025, in observance of a day off for civil service members. This closure coincides with the National Holiday on May 3, which falls on a Saturday this year.

With the e-Tax Office accessible 24/7, many tax matters can be handled without needing to visit a physical tax office. Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the online services available at podatki.gov.pl, which provide a comprehensive solution for managing their tax obligations.
