David Tennant Dazzles Again As BAFTA 2025 Host

Star-studded ceremony sees major nominees and entertaining performances, setting the stage for unforgettable moments.

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards lit up the Royal Festival Hall on February 16, with beloved Scottish actor David Tennant returning to host the prestigious event for the second consecutive year. At 53, Tennant brought his charm and comedic flair to the awards show, which is widely recognized as one of the most significant nights on the British film calendar.

Wowing on the red carpet, Tennant sported a unique black tux adorned with colorful sequins, paired with his new purple quiff. He walked alongside wife Georgia Tennant, who also turned heads with her stunning lace ensemble. The evening kicked off with Tennant's lively performance of The Proclaimers' hit "I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)," featuring vocal appearances from stars such as James McAvoy, Anna Kendrick, and Colman Domingo.

After the musical introduction, Tennant opened the ceremony with his monologue, taking playful jabs at various film nominees and even the recently re-elected U.S. President, Donald Trump. He quipped about the biopic The Apprentice, sharing, "Donald Trump, he says he hasn’t seen The Apprentice because it’s a 15. It’s not on Nickelodeon," which drew laughter from the audience. Ever the comedian, he also reflected jokingly on the films nominated, saying watching the "gritty Narcos thriller" Emilia Perez turned out to be unexpectedly musical, making for some light-hearted commentary.

This year's nominees included Netflix's Emilia Perez, up for 11 awards, along with Wicked, The Brutalist, and Anora, all vying for top prizes. The ceremony highlighted some of the cinematic magic from the past year, as stars from various genres graced the event.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, both nominated for their performances, stole the spotlight on the red carpet. Grande arrived just before the ceremony, stylishly dressed in a low-cut gown with a dramatic pink skirt, sending fans buzzing on social media as speculation arose about whether she would attend. Meanwhile, Erivo dazzled audiences with her quirky white lace outfit, solidifying her status as one of the evening’s standout attendees.

Among other notable guests were Demi Moore, who was nominated for her role, Ralph Fiennes, and the ever-charming Jeff Goldblum, who took to the piano during the Memoriam segment of the evening. Goldblum’s performance added to the emotional resonance of the night, reminding guests of beloved stars gone but not forgotten.

Throughout the event, Tennant emphasized the softer tone he aimed for this year, stating to the Radio Times: "The BAFTAs are supposed to be kind. Last year we weren’t trying to roast people... I think if I’ve learned anything, it’s probably about not making anyone feel uncomfortable." His approach was welcomed as nominees took to the stage, many of whom were greeted with roaring applause.

One of the major highlights included Warwick Davis receiving the BAFTA fellowship, recognizing his long-standing contributions to film and television. His presence added historical significance to the evening, as the industry continues to evolve.

Earlier, Tennant revealed his anxieties about the big night, captured on his wife’s Instagram as he joked about the behind-the-scenes preparations. “This show doesn’t just throw itself together,” he chuckled, adding to the jovial atmosphere as he arrived for the ceremony.

Within the competitive categories, standout performances were recognized. Mikey Madison starred alongside notable names like Demi Moore and was praised for her role in Anora. The top five nominees in the Leading Actress category created quite the buzz, with Erivo and Grande at the forefront.

After the ceremonies, BAFTA Chief Executive Jane Millichip spoke to reporters about the unpredictability of the awards this year, expressing her eagerness to see which projects would emerge victorious. "I think the viewing public has always welcomed films not in English, whether subtitled or dubbed," she told PA news agency, highlighting the global influence of cinema today.

The results were finally tallied, with Conclave winning the top honors for Best Film. Mikey Madison claimed the Leading Actress Award, with Adrien Brody celebrated as Best Leading Actor for The Brutalist, marking significant wins for both films.

Beyond the awards, the vibrant red carpet atmosphere was typified by the playful interactions among the stars, with Tennant nudging celebrities for light-hearted banter, making for memorable moments. His efforts to blend comedy and admiration for the industry were well-received, drawing enthusiastic approval from the audience.

Overall, the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards showcased the best of British cinema, with Tennant's engaging hosting reigniting enthusiasm for the film community. Some might even say this was one of the more heartfelt and lively BAFTAS to date!
