David Gilmour, the legendary guitarist of Pink Floyd, is giving fans something to savor from his recent solo tour. To celebrate the incredible success of his latest studio album, Luck and Strange, Gilmour has released a live recording of its first single, The Piper's Call, titled The Piper's Call Live Around The World. This digital-only release showcases performances from various iconic venues around the globe where Gilmour performed over the past year.
The live recording is a creative mash-up featuring clips from The Brighton Centre, Circus Maximus in Rome, London's Royal Albert Hall, Los Angeles' Intuit Dome, and Madison Square Garden in New York. Edited together by Charlie Andrew and Matt Glasbey, the result is a seamless track capturing the energy and emotion of Gilmour's live performances throughout the Luck and Strange tour.
Reflecting on his touring experience, Gilmour expressed, "On the Luck and Strange tour, I played with the best band I’ve ever had. Their personalities, playing abilities and enthusiasm for my new music have made for a fabulous experience for Polly and me.” He added, “Romany’s voice really stands out and has its own character, bringing a sense of mischief and fun to the live performance, which I think we needed.”
The artist's gratitude wasn’t just limited to his band. He took the opportunity to thank fans as well: “Thank you to everyone who attended the shows in Europe and America and thank you for buying Luck and Strange. I hope you found as much enjoyment in the music as we did performing it.”
The album, which Gilmour described as his first of new material in nine years, was extremely well-received, hitting the #1 spot in eight countries, with top ten status in another fourteen. Released earlier this year, Luck and Strange includes nine tracks, featuring singles such as The Piper's Call and Dark And Velvet Nights. One of the standout tracks, Between Two Points, features vocals and harp from 22-year-old Romany Gilmour, David's daughter.
Gilmour’s recent touring spectacle kicked off with two sold-out warm-up shows at The Brighton Centre, quickly gaining momentum as they took to Rome for six sold-out nights at Circus Maximus and then to the Royal Albert Hall. Concerts continued on to Los Angeles where they played multiple sold-out shows at the Intuit Dome and Hollywood Bowl before concluding the tour with five unforgettable nights at Madison Square Garden.
This extensive series of performances not only highlights Gilmour's enduring popularity but also the vitality of live music, especially after periods of uncertainty during the pandemic. Fans have been eager to connect with their favorite artists, and Gilmour's tour proved to be both cathartic and exhilarating for all involved.
Luck and Strange features remarkable production and artistry, coming from Gilmour and Charlie Andrew, who is well-known for his collaborative works with alternative rock band alt-J. The artwork for the album is crafted by renowned artist Anton Corbijn, known for his iconic photography and visual art within the music industry.
Given the overwhelmingly positive reception to both the tour and the album, Gilmour's live recording of The Piper's Call stands as even more than just nostalgia; it encapsulates the spirit of his performances and the joy shared between him, his band, and the audience.
Fans can now enjoy this unique listening experience anytime, reliving the magic and energy of the unforgettable concerts from the Luck and Strange tour.
