David Genat Wins $9.2 Million On Deal Or No Deal Island

The former Survivor champion sets record for largest cash prize in reality TV history

In a groundbreaking moment for reality television, David Genat has emerged victorious on NBC's "Deal or No Deal Island," walking away with a staggering $9.2 million, making it the second-largest cash prize in television history. The former Australian Survivor champion's win not only sets a new record but also highlights the crossover potential of Australian talent into American reality shows.

Genat's monumental victory comes just days after the finale aired, where he faced off against 13 other contestants in a high-stakes challenge hosted by actor Joe Manganiello. The competition featured celebrity banker Chrissy Teigen, who made history as the first female banker in the franchise's history. Genat's $5.8 million prize is only surpassed by Jeff Allen's $10 million win on "Beast Games," solidifying Genat's status among reality TV's elite.

During the final episode, Genat displayed remarkable strategic prowess, rejecting multiple six-figure offers from the banker over seven rounds, ultimately choosing to risk it all for the top prize of $12,232,001. "I didn’t want to play it safe," he told People. "I watch a lot of the competitive reality shows, and I want to see someone that comes in and swings really big, does crazy stuff and maybe fails and then succeeds. I want to root for someone. I try to be that for people watching at home, and I think I nailed it this time." His bold approach paid off, as he ultimately accepted the banker’s offer, avoiding the risk of leaving with just $75.

Genat's decision to pick case 18 was deeply personal; it marks the birth date of three of his children and the day his father passed away. "It’s good to put some good positive vibes back on number 18," he remarked, underscoring the sentimental value behind his choice. Reflecting on his experience, Genat expressed a profound connection to his late father throughout the game, believing that his father "gifted" him the prize money.

While Genat is often seen as the "villain" of reality shows due to his competitive nature, he was surprised to find that he came across as one of the nicer contestants on "Deal or No Deal Island." "After watching it back, I realized I was actually one of the nice guys," he said. His strategic gameplay was praised by fellow reality TV veterans, including Rob "Boston Rob" Mariano, who noted Genat's impressive ability to hide his identity as a former Survivor contestant.

In an interview, Mariano commented on Genat's gameplay, stating, "He had a big leg up, but he also had to execute, and he did flawlessly." However, Mariano also pointed out that Parvati Shallow, another contestant on the show, played a pivotal role in key moments of the game, particularly during the final Temple challenge. Mariano remarked, "I don’t think he made the decision to put Parvati in—I think Parvati made the decision to put Parvati in," highlighting her strategic acumen.

Genat's victory is a significant moment not just for him but for Australian reality television as a whole. "No one from Australia has done what I’ve done and no one from Australia has crossed over into American reality television, this is the first time it’s been done," he stated. He hopes that his success will inspire other Australian talents to pursue opportunities in the U.S. reality TV landscape.

As he celebrates his win, Genat plans to enjoy the spoils, which will be subject to approximately 30 percent U.S. tax. He expressed intentions to treat his family, including his wife Pearl Christensen and their four children, to lavish holidays and even mentioned buying a new motorcycle for himself. "I probably shouldn't be saying this out loud because they're gonna hold me to it, but like, all my kids are coming up to driving age, so I'm probably gonna have to buy a fleet of new vehicles. I mean, hey, that’s what I’m gonna do," he joked.

Genat's journey in reality television began with his appearance on "Australian Survivor: Champions vs Contenders" in 2018, followed by a triumphant return to win "Survivor: All Stars" in 2020, where he earned $500,000. His total television winnings now approach $10 million, positioning him as one of the most successful contestants in reality TV history.

Looking ahead, Genat is set to return to the reality TV scene in "Australian Survivor: Australia v The World," which will feature international reality TV veterans. His experience on both Australian and American reality shows showcases his adaptability and strategic mindset, making him a formidable competitor.

Joe Manganiello, the host of "Deal or No Deal Island," is also a fan of reality television and expressed his admiration for Genat's gameplay. Manganiello, who nearly became a contestant on "Survivor" decades ago, has embraced his role as a host, bringing his passion for the genre to the forefront. He acknowledged Genat's impressive win and the significance of his achievement in the realm of reality television.

As the dust settles on this historic win, David Genat's story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of reality television and the potential for extraordinary success. With his impressive track record and newfound wealth, Genat is poised to continue making waves in the industry, inspiring future generations of reality TV stars.
