David 'Ace' Cannon, Beloved Charlotte Radio Host, Passes Away

The sudden loss of radio personality raises memories of his humor and charitable efforts.

The radio community has lost one of its beloved figures, David "Ace" Cannon, who passed away on February 5, 2025, at the age of 56. Cannon was best known for his role as co-host of the popular Charlotte-based morning show, The Ace & TJ Show, which had entertained listeners for over 25 years.

The news of Cannon’s death was shared by his sister, Piper Wilson, via her Facebook page, where she asked friends and family to keep their family in prayer during this difficult time. She wrote, "Please keep my family in your prayers as my brother, David Ace Cannon passed away today." Hits 96.1, the FM station associated with The Ace & TJ Show, expressed their sorrow as well, stating, "The iHeartMedia Charlotte family is devastated to learn of the passing of David ‘Ace’ Cannon. For years, he was an important part of so many people's lives, providing companionship and laughter to his many listeners and colleagues. Our thoughts are with Ace’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

Cannon's departure from the show was abrupt and caught many fans by surprise. After leaving in September 2024, his co-host Ritchie "TJ" Beams continued the show alongside Bryan "Riggins" Weber, rebranding it as The TJ & Riggins Show. Adam Goodman, their manager, spoke to the media, saying, "This is a person we love. Our hope for Ace is... there’s nothing positive we wouldn’t hope for for him." The sudden change brought deep concern for Cannon's well-being, which he addressed later through social media.

Just weeks after his exit, Cannon posted an emotional Instagram video, explaining his need to step back from the public eye to focus on himself and his personal challenges. He stated, "I’m taking this time to work on myself and create a new future." Cannon also revealed his separation from his wife, Amanda, and expressed his struggle to reconcile his past with moving onto the next chapter of his life. "I never really took the time to heal myself..." he mentioned, continuing to encourage his listeners, asking them to respect his family’s need for privacy.

The challenges Cannon faced were not just professional. He endured the heartbreaking loss of his 21-year-old daughter, Payton, who tragically died in July 2020 following a car accident. The pain from such losses undoubtedly shaped Cannon’s outlook and the urgency behind his decision to prioritize his mental health and family.

Throughout his career, Cannon and Beams garnered significant attention for their comedic chemistry, as well as for their philanthropic endeavors. They founded Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids, which provided all-expenses-paid trips for children with disabilities or terminal illnesses to Disney World. Cannon recalled their start with the charity, indicating their initial lack of formal structure, but dedicated themselves to ensuring these children had memorable experiences.

During his time, they also created Payton’s Promise, dedicated to honoring his late daughter. The charity and its roots reflect the compassionate drive behind Cannon’s persona, making him not just another voice on air, but also someone who genuinely cared for his community.

Fans of The Ace & TJ Show fondly recall the duo’s signature mix of comedy and heartfelt stories, with Cannon often showing his playful side with pranks and high-energy stunts during their broadcasts. They initially launched the show together back in 1993 when they were both single and had teamed up at various stations across the Southeast before finally putting Charlotte on the map with their morning show on Kiss 95.1 around 1998.

The way Cannon approached radio was described as refreshingly honest and engaging. He was much more than just a mouthpiece; he was someone who shared laughter and support with listeners who turned him on every morning. The loss of his presence will be felt by many, with multiple platforms already flooded with tributes from devoted fans paying homage to his memory.

With Cannon's departure, the community has lost not only a vibrant personality from the airwaves but also someone who touched lives with his caring endeavors outside of radio. Fans and colleagues alike will undoubtedly carry forward the lessons of kindness and humor he brought to life through his work.

At this time, funeral arrangements have not been publicly disclosed, but the radio industry and fans remain united in grief, reflecting on the legacy of David ‘Ace’ Cannon and his remarkable impact over the decades.
