Daughters Remember Talented Actress Meiko Nakamura

Kanna and Hazuki Kamitsu share memories of their mother on 'Tetsuko no Heya' as they reflect on her legacy and love for life.

In a poignant reflection on the life of one of Japan's most cherished actresses, Meiko Nakamura, her daughters Kanna Kamitsu and Hazuki Kamitsu recently appeared on the popular talk show, 'Tetsuko no Heya,' airing on March 20, 2025. Nakamura, who graced the entertainment world for an impressive 86 years, passed away on December 31, 2023, at the age of 89. Just before her death, she remained active, participating in television recordings that would ultimately serve as her last performances.

Her daughters shared heartfelt memories of their mother, describing her as not only a talented actress but also an integral part of their family dynamics. Kanna recalled her father, Yoshito Kamitsu, often telling them, "You are born to live with others. Our parents were only there to help us grow into independent individuals." This perspective encapsulates the nurturing environment that Meiko and Yoshito created for Kanna and Hazuki.

As they reminisced on national television, Kanna and Hazuki recalled hilarious and touching stories that reflected their mother's personality. Nakamura frequently surprised them with her elegance, even during casual events, including a school open class where her daughters were astounded by her stylish appearance amid her busy schedule filled with stage performances. Hazuki remarked, "Mom was energetic and elegant, even surprising us at school events while performing on stage." Such anecdotes painted a vivid picture of a woman dedicated to her craft while remaining engaged in the lives of her daughters.

In her later years, Meiko's commitment to simplifying her life became evident as she undertook significant decluttering efforts. At 80, she disposed of most of her belongings, including seven trucks' worth of items, to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle. “I suspect she may have only kept about ten outfits,” Hazuki reflected, sharing her mother's penchant for giving away clothes and kimonos even when generously gifted. "She loved gifting her belongings to others, often coming home wearing just a simple undergarment after giving away her beautiful kimono and obi when she was tipsy!"

This light-hearted yet reflective tone carried through their sharing, revealing the close bond between the sisters and their mother. Memories of simple items, such as a well-worn salon apron and the girls’ kindergarten uniforms found in her belongings, brought laughter and warmth in their discussion.

Lamentably, Nakamura’s vibrant life came to a close when she succumbed to health issues at 89. Her husband, Yoshito, grieving the unexpected loss of his wife, continues to honor her memory in unique ways, including maintaining a ‘Meiko's Room’ in their home—a place where he keeps the sake cabinet that belonged to her, as a substitute for a family altar which he cherishes dearly. He has decorated it thoughtfully with miniature stairs and paint to maintain a sacred connection to Meiko. During the chat, it was mentioned, "He insists that Meiko remains Meiko Nakamura even after death!" highlighting the profound respect and love he holds even in her absence.

The daughters have found solace in their mother's legacy, often sharing playful and touching stories about her. They noted that their father’s solitary moments are filled with reminiscences of Meiko, with Kanna observing, "I often talk to her photograph. It feels like she is always close to me." Such reflections showcase the enduring bond they continue to share with their beloved matriarch.

In addition to celebrating Meiko's life, their discussions included Yoshito's longing for companionship in the wake of his wife’s passing. The sisters express concern about how best to support their father, especially given his age of 92 and emotional state post-Meiko. Kanna shared, "My brother has returned from Spain to stay with him, but we continue to explore how we can ensure he feels loved and supported. Perhaps sending him back to Spain might be a good idea! The family connection stays strong over there too."

Reflecting on their mother’s passing, Kanna mentioned, "We recently learned that before her death, she wished to re-do her honeymoon abroad, a wish she perhaps never fulfilled due to the constraints of her time." They reflect fondly on the couple’s past life, expressing the impact of a relationship that endured multiple decades.

Both sisters believe they’ve learned much from their mother’s remarkable journey. Hazuki concluded with a sense of acceptance, “In some ways, the difference between life and death isn’t so significant. I find myself speaking to her photo, reflecting on her strength and character, feeling grateful for all her lessons.” This sentiment resonates deeply with their shared experience of celebrating a life well-lived.

Ultimately, through laughter, memories, and reflections during their appearance on 'Tetsuko no Heya', Kanna and Hazuki Kamitsu have not only honored their mother's legacy but also showcased the vast emotional journey intertwined with love and family bonds in the face of loss. As they navigate this new chapter without her physical presence, they endeavor to carry forth her spirit, ensuring that Meiko Nakamura’s influence continues to resonate in their lives and beyond.
