DANA Storm Brings Severe Weather To Canarian Islands

Heavy rains and snow alerts linger as AEMET warns of storms and strong winds across the archipelago.

The Canarian Islands are currently facing severe weather conditions as the DANA (isolated depression at high levels) storm brings heavy rains, strong winds, and potential snowfall. The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) has issued multiple warnings for the region, predicting significant precipitation mainly affecting the northern parts of the islands.

Starting Saturday, December 21, 2024, rainfall has intensified across the archipelago, with the most impacted areas including Gran Canaria, La Palma, and Tenerife. According to AEMET, conditions are expected to worsen on Sunday, December 22, with alerts for thunderstorms and snow above 2000 meters.

The forecast indicates heavy rains, particularly for areas exposed to the northeastern winds, which will bring continuous precipitation through Monday, December 23, with some locations potentially receiving up to 60 mm of rain within 12 hours. The situation remains precarious as the storm persistently lingers over the islands, generating conditions conducive to flash flooding and hazardous travel.

Snowfall is also anticipated, especially on high ground, including the Teide range, creating the possibility for the picturesque sight of snow-capped peaks during the festive season. AEMET states, "The precipitation will be particularly persistent in the northern zones of the higher islands, with snowfall above 2000 meters." Residents and tourists alike are urged to exercise caution, especially when venturing to higher altitudes.

Meanwhile, on the eastern islands such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, local authorities report the possibility of isolated storms, which could include strong winds and hail. The region may experience weather fluctuations, with skies clearing expected by the afternoon following morning rains. The temperatures across the islands are projected to drop slightly as the cold fronts move through.

The DANA phenomenon, which originates from much cooler air descending from the upper atmosphere, creates unstable weather conditions, commonly resulting in irregular rainfall patterns and unpredictable storms. This unique weather pattern leaves east-facing coasts more susceptible to high waves and rough seas.

AEMET has also designated the entire archipelago under yellow alert for potential severe weather across all islands. The meteorological agency focuses on advising local residents of associated risks, particularly with respect to the wind gusts where velocities may exceed 70 km/h, causing additional hazards.

On Sunday, the regions of La Palma and Tenerife are anticipated to see greater accumulations of rain and snow compared to other areas. "The weather across the islands this Sunday will feature intense rains, winds, storms, and snowfall," AEMET noted. These statements reflect the urgency and need for residents to remain vigilant as conditions evolve.

These weather changes come as part of wider patterns affecting the Iberian Peninsula, where contrasting weather conditions are impacting fifteen autonomous communities. Weather alerts are also prominent in regions affected by wind, rain, and low visibilities, raising concerns about mishaps among those traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.

The incoming cold winds and precipitation could spell trouble, yet the minds of many locals gaze at the skies, reminiscing about the past winters when heavier snowfalls graced their mostly sunny islands. For many who are accustomed to warm weather, the idea of seeing the Teide covered with snow is both enchanting and alarming simultaneously.

Reports state freezing temperatures have dipped below zero at higher altitudes. Locations have recorded -1.7 degrees Celsius at Izaña and -0.7 degrees at La Palma's Roque de Los Muchachos. Commentators predict this trend may mean the highest altitudes could see significant snow accumulations over the coming days. Conditions on the ground highlight the duality of the DANA storm — it brings forth both beauty and peril.

Looking forward, AEMET anticipates the DANA may evolve as it continues impacting atmospheric conditions over the region. The agency's forecasts remain closely tied to observing how this system behaves as it may transition to colder and steadier patterns through the middle of the week.

Such heavy clouds of uncertainty resemble the pressures gathering over the islands, as warnings about potential calamities loom. Various residents and agencies facilitate emergency protocols as they prepare for the weather's volatile behavior.

While anticipation hangs thick in the air, officials remind everyone to stay informed and safe. Preparations for what is expected to be the most impactful weather of this season underline the community's resilience when faced with nature's unpredictable moods.

Authorities and weather agencies will continue to monitor conditions across the archipelago, providing updates as they emerge. They urge the public to heed advice related to travel, especially as storms can provoke quick changes and risks.
