Dame Laura Kenny Voices Concerns Over Commonwealth Games Future

Kenny hopes Glasgow 2026 will show the event remains viable and relevant for athletes.

Dame Laura Kenny has voiced concerns over the future of the Commonwealth Games, stating there is "a worry" about the event's continuing viability. Speaking after her appointment as the new President of Commonwealth Games England (CGE), she expressed hope for the upcoming 2026 Games scheduled to take place in Glasgow, believing it could demonstrate the importance of the Games.

Kenny, who was appointed President on March 10, 2025, expressed gratitude to Glasgow for agreeing to host this scaled-down version of the Games after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to rising costs. "I feel so grateful to Glasgow for putting their hands up and saying they will have it," she said, reflecting on the initial uncertainty surrounding the event.

Born from her achievements as the youngest President ever to hold the office, Kenny has made substantial contributions to Commonwealth athletics, having represented Team England at three different Games. At the Delhi Games in 2010, she made her debut, followed by her standout performances at the 2014 and 2022 Games, where she won multiple medals including gold and bronze. Describing her past involvement, she lamented the slimmed-down structure of the upcoming event, acknowledging how it could affect various sports.

"There is a worry," Kenny reiterated. "You have to worry and be a bit concerned." Her call to action aims to rally support and research on how to improve the structure of future Games and attract more hosting cities. She emphasized the need for accessible and engaging formats to revitalize interest among potential hosts for the event's sustainability moving forward.

Glasgow presents itself as the host city once again after previously hosting the Commonwealth Games successfully in 2014, marking what Kenny hopes will be another successful outing. "I hope everything they put in will validate it is still a key event," she said, shedding light on her aspirations for the Games’ legacy.

Echoing Kenny’s sentiments, John Steele, the Chair of Commonwealth Games England, expressed enthusiasm about her appointment. He remarked, "Her passion for the Games is clear and her insights will be invaluable." Steele pointed out the pressing need for CGE to reflect on its past experiences, emphasizing the necessity for innovation as the movement approaches its centenary in 2030.

"Dame Laura will play a pivotal role as we look toward the future," Steele articulated, reassuring stakeholders of the organization’s commitment to not only protect the future of Commonwealth Sport but also to inspire and guide the next generation of Team England athletes.

Kenny's insights and experience, being one of Britain’s most decorated female athletes with five Olympic titles and numerous European and World titles, will allow her to engage effectively with current athletes. "I love the unique feel of the event and I'm thrilled to work with and support England's athletes as they prepare for Glasgow and future Commonwealth Youth Games too," she stated, demonstrating her commitment to fostering unity and purpose across diverse sports.

The Commonwealth Games have always been recognized as more than just sport; they embody shared values and camaraderie among participating nations. With Kenny at the helm, there is hope for rejuvenation within the framework of this multi-sport environment.

Despite the financial burdens facing the Commonwealth Games, Kenny remains optimistic, stating, "After this period of uncertainty, this is a really exciting time for Team England." She expresses eagerness to tackle the challenges head-on, signifying her readiness to lead CGE as they approach Glasgow 2026.

With her wealth of knowledge and passion for sports, she believes the Commonwealth Games will continue to hold its place as an important event within the sporting calendar. If properly managed and promoted, Kenny's leadership may inspire future generations to pursue glory under the Commonwealth Games banner.
