Dallas Mavericks Navigate Season With Injuries And Mentorship

Amidst injuries, Kyrie Irving's guidance continues to shape young players' careers as the Mavericks push for success.

The Dallas Mavericks are currently navigating a tumultuous season marked by injuries and roster changes, but they are still generating enthusiasm among fans and players alike. A key figure in this dynamic is Kyrie Irving, whose recent torn ACL has raised questions about his future with the franchise, yet his influence continues to resonate throughout the organization.

Two weeks after Irving's injury, his impact remains visible through players within the Mavericks' G League affiliate, the Texas Legends. Young guard Jazian Gortman credited Irving’s mentorship as a vital element in his development as he seeks to fine-tune his skills. Gortman, who is just 22, started the season with a two-way contract but was waived after 16 games, primarily due to injuries plaguing the Mavericks' frontcourt. Since returning to the Legends, he has shone brightly, averaging 20.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists over 21 appearances.

In a recent interview, Gortman discussed how he still connects with Irving, seeking advice and insights about the game. “I used to watch Kyrie a lot when I was younger,” Gortman told RG. “So just to get older and end up running into him… it’s been incredible.” He noted how Irving’s willingness to help younger players is significant, stating, “I give him a lot of credit for even extending a hand and actually wanting to help the youth.” Irving’s approachable demeanor made it easier for Gortman to understand the nuances of basketball positioning and strategy. Even now, he wears Irving's ANTA signature shoe as a testament to their connection, affirming, “I still talk to Kyrie, too.”

Meanwhile, despite Irving's absence, the Mavericks managed to snap a four-game losing streak with a thrilling 123-117 victory over the Detroit Pistons on March 21, 2025. The win came at a crucial moment, highlighting not only the resilience of the team but also the emerging leadership of other players, especially Spencer Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie led the charge with a season-high 31 points on 9-12 shooting, also managing 11-13 from the free-throw line.

In the aftermath of Irving's injury, the Mavericks' coaching staff has recognized Dinwiddie's importance on the floor. Previous struggles with shooting consistency are being overshadowed by his growing leadership role, particularly during the month of March, where he has averaged 14.1 points and 5.2 assists. With Dinwiddie's contributions, the Mavericks appear poised to remain in contention for a play-in spot.

However, the discussion surrounding Irving remains a point of contention for fans and analysts. Criticism emerged regarding his heavy playing minutes leading up to his injury. Some attribute his torn ACL to the reliance placed upon him following the trade for Luka Doncic. Before the injury, Irving averaged an NBA-high of 39.3 minutes across his last ten games, a statistic that has prompted backlash. Irving expressed frustration over these accusations, asserting, “They blame J Kidd or blame the Dallas Mavericks… If you ask 95% of the league if they’d rather be playing 15 minutes or 35 minutes a night, I guarantee you 95% would say 35 minutes.”

Mark Cuban, the Mavericks’ owner, has also weighed in on Irving's future. There are concerns of potential parting ways, especially as Irving holds a player option worth $43.9 million for next season. Cuban remarked that separating from Irving would “make no sense,” as he sees value in retaining a player with championship experience and a proven ability to impact games. Meanwhile, Dallas Morning News' Mike Curtis believes that as long as Irving is healthy, the goal is to keep him in Dallas. “The goal is to keep Kyrie in Dallas as long as they can,” Curtis stated, adding that before the injury, he was on track for a max extension.

As the Mavericks continue to navigate their challenging season, they remain hopeful and focused on their goals. Players like Spencer Dinwiddie and Jazian Gortman are stepping up, looking to fill the void left by Irving’s absence. Furthermore, the lessons imparted by Irving serve to empower younger talent, ensuring that the franchise remains in contention for years to come, with an eye on a swift return to playoff glory.
