Daihachiro Matsui Unveils New Film 'Muromachi Burai'

An exciting historical drama set during Japan's tumultuous Muromachi period is set to take theaters by storm.

The anticipation for the upcoming historical drama film, Muromachi Burai, directed by Yu Irie, is palpable as the release date approaches. The movie is set to have its IMAX preview on January 10, 2025, before hitting theaters nationwide on January 17, 2025. Irie, known for his compelling storytelling through films like SR: Saitama no Rapper and Anno Koto, is tackling the seldom-explored late Muromachi period, drawing from the works of award-winning author Ryosuke Kagimine.

At the film's core, we find rebel leader Hieda, played by the talented Yo Oizumi. This character is more than just a warrior; he embodies the spirit of defiance against the oppressive regime and seeks liberation for the people plagued by famine and disease. The film depicts his struggles and triumphs as he navigates this chaotic world filled with lawlessness.

"入江監督が、直木賞作家・垣根涼介の小説を原作に、これまであまり映画にならなかった'室町時代末期'が舞台の時代劇に挑んだ," says Irie. This quote highlights the film's unique premise, bridging the vast historical gap to showcase real-life struggles during this intense period.

Alongside Oizumi, Shinichi Tsutsumi portrays Doken, another pivotal character who presents a contrasting image. Initially depicted as the enforcer upholding the shogunate's law and order, Doken's complex relationship with Hieda reveals the nuances of friendship and rivalry amid societal breakdown. Together, the two characters navigate the turbulent atmosphere of pre-Sengoku Japan as they collide ideologically and personally.

The action sequences, crafted by internationally renowned choreographers and coupled with exceptional performances, promise to deliver breathtaking scenes. Irie's creative decisions breathe new life to familiar tropes, making them fresh and engaging for the audience. Taiji Sudo, the film's producer, encapsulated the goal beautifully when he stated, "大泉洋史上最高にカッコイイ男を演じてほしい," expressing his desire for Oizumi's portrayal to be both riveting and heroic.

The film's narrative incorporates the historical backdrop, showcasing regions struggling under layers of suffering. Drawing inspiration from real-life events, Muromachi Burai brings to life the chaotic urban scenes prevalent during the late Muromachi period, particularly highlighting the chaotic environment of Kyoto. Famine and disease serve as constant reminders of the fragility of society as townspeople are depicted struggling to survive. Set against this historical turmoil, we witness Oizumi's Hieda engage villages ravaged by corruption, demonstrating both might and compassion for the people.

Further intrigue surrounds the character development of Saizo, portrayed by Kendo Nagao. Emerging from hardship, Nagao's character portrays growth from despair to prowess, connecting with the audience as he learns under the tutelage of seasoned fighters. His evolution exemplifies resilience and hope amid unprecedented challenges, as the audience witnesses his birth from hardship to becoming one of the great warriors.

On the technical side, Muromachi Burai does not shy away from spectacle. The film promises to stimulate the senses with impressive filmmaking techniques including stunning visuals and elaborate set designs. The filming locations boast authentic period-appropriate setups crafted painstakingly by the artisans at Toei Kyoto Studio. The attention to detail, including costumes and props, transports viewers straight to the tumultuous era.

Notably, with significant technological advancements, the film is also touted as the first of its kind to be presented on the IMAX format, which is expected to heighten the viewing experience. This marks an exciting moment as traditional storytelling merges with modern cinematic technology, making the historical epic accessible to both enthusiasts and newcomers alike. This new direction for Toei could set the stage for future projects aiming to marry history with innovation seamlessly.

Freelance announcer Nobuyuki Kasai commented, "人気絶好調のなにわ男子、長尾謙杜。特にラストにおける長回しのアクションは大変な見所となった," highlighting the excitement and buzz surrounding Nagao's portrayal and action sequences as audience members look forward to intense climax moments.

With its gripping storyline, rich character arcs, and lavish production design, Muromachi Burai is poised to captivate audiences, forming connections through shared stories. Set for release soon, it encapsulates the raw human experience and echoes themes of struggle and perseverance against overwhelming odds. The filmmakers anticipate eliciting not just entertainment but reflection on societal themes creatively woven through unique narratives.
