Cynthia Erivo And Ariana Grande Dazzle At Japan Premiere Of 'Wicked'

Stars express love for Japan during the exciting launch event for the anticipated film adaptation.

Japanese actress Cynthia Erivo and American singer Ariana Grande captivated audiences at the Japan premiere of the much-anticipated film 'Wicked' held on February 19 at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya, Tokyo. The event witnessed the duo alongside director Jon M. Chu, mingling with fans and sharing their excitement about the film's release.

Both stars expressed their joy at returning to Japan, with Erivo, who plays the misunderstood witch Elphaba, stating, "I'm so proud to be back again with this work." Grande, portraying the lovable witch Glinda, added, "Japan is my most favorite country and I’m really happy to be here," even delighting the crowd by saying in Japanese, "I love Japan!"

The film, which offers a fresh cinematic take on the beloved Broadway musical, delves deep behind the scenes of the 'Wizard of Oz' narrative, showcasing the two witches' intertwined destinies. During the premiere, Chu emphasized the friendship theme prevalent throughout the storyline, stating, "Making this movie was truly wonderful. It's about two opposites overcoming their differences to bond, and I believe the world craves this message today." He expressed gratitude for collaborating with such talented individuals at this remarkable time.

Erivo and Grande took turns answering questions posed by the event's MC, sharing insights about their approach to the characters. Grande revealed, "I've loved 'Wicked' for 22 years. I'm so grateful to finally introduce this film to audiences here." Similarly, Erivo remarked on the importance of their friendship throughout the film's narrative, citing, "This story embodies love, sisterhood, and growth, and I am honored to portray it on screen. It teaches you not to fear staying true to yourself."

The significance of their performances was also highlighted, especially as Erivo detailed the physical demands of her role. She explained, "Singing 'Defying Gravity' requires not just vocal talent but also capturing the emotions of flying. I trained hard and wanted to perform my stunts authentically. Thanks to the stunt professionals and vocal coaches, I was able to sing live during the shoot, embedding myself within each moment of the film."

Grande added her experience, "I prepared extensively with vocal and acting coaches, ensuring I could truly express myself without anxiety. I loved singing live on set; it made my emotional connection to the role even stronger." She also mentioned her improvisation during the song 'Popular,' allowing her to interact genuinely with Erivo on stage during filming.

During the latter part of the event, Japanese voice cast members, including Mitsuki Takahata and Kimi Yamazaki, presented flowers to Erivo and Grande, adding to the warm atmosphere of the evening. When asked about their impressions working with Erivo, Takahata expressed, "I’m very moved to meet you, Ms. Erivo; your stage presence is impressive."

The evening culminated with Erivo, once more expressing her love for Japan and the Japanese audience. "I really love Japan. Thank you!" she said, preceding her final remarks urging everyone to enjoy the film, which hits theaters on March 7.

With enthusiastic anticipation, 'Wicked' offers audiences both spectacle and heartfelt storytelling, and this premiere served as the perfect introduction to what fans can expect from the film.
