Cyclone Dana Approaches Odisha And West Bengal With 120 Kmph Winds

Officials evacuate over 2.8 lakh residents as Cyclone Dana set to make landfall soon with heavy rainfall forecast

A fierce cyclone, named Dana, is expected to make landfall along the coast of Odisha between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port on the morning of October 25, with winds topping 120 kilometers per hour. Authorities are urging residents to evacuate from low-lying areas as the storm is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall and tidal surges of up to two meters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been closely monitoring the situation, reporting the cyclone's current position roughly 460 kilometers southeast of Paradip. Dana, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, has already begun to impact parts of Kendrapara and Bhadrak, causing rain and adverse weather conditions.

To prepare for the impending disaster, the Odisha government is mobilizing resources and establishing control measures. Approximately 2.82 lakh individuals from coastal and low-lying districts have been identified for evacuation, particularly from districts like Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore. Emergency services, including 13 state disaster management battalions, have been deployed along with 14 battalions from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Local authorities are setting up shelters, distributing dry rations, and closely monitoring vulnerable communities. Many schools across nine districts will also be closed as part of the precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway on the other side of the border, with the West Bengal government evacuations of over 1.14 lakh people from several regions, including the Sundarbans and Sagar Island. The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has assured readiness to deal with the cyclone’s impact.

Flight operations at Bhubaneswar airport are set to be suspended from 5 PM on October 24 until the morning of October 25. Similarly, Kolkata airport will halt all flight operations for 15 hours from 6 PM on October 24.

Train services are also being affected. The Eastern Railway has announced the cancellation of 190 local and express trains from Sealdah station to prioritize passenger safety, starting at 8 PM on Thursday until 10 AM on Friday. Over 150 express and passenger trains have already been called off as part of the safety measures.

The Health Departments of both states are on high alert. Officials emphasized the importance of preparedness especially for potential medical emergencies arising from natural disasters. For example, the Odisha Health Minister, Mukesh Mahaling, stated, "The Health Department is on alert. Directions have been provided to all Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs) to be available during the cyclone's impact and to handle various emergencies, including snake bites which can occur after heavy rains. Antivenom will also be made available."

The IMD has issued red warnings for specific districts throughout Odisha and West Bengal highlighting expectations of relentless rains. Senior scientists at the IMD forecasted significant rainfall between October 24 and 25, with totals reaching 20 cm during this period. This weather pattern is anticipated to lead to local flooding, particularly during the cyclone’s approach.

Fishermen have been warned to avoid venturing out to sea during the storm, with advisories issued to prevent any unnecessary risks. Coastal beaches have been deserted, with local authorities restricting access to popular areas along the coast to maintain safety. Prohibitory orders have been put forth for areas like Paradip and Ganjam.

Despite the storm's imminent threat, local and state officials continue to work collaboratively on rescue and rehabilitation plans. The Indian Army and Navy have also been placed on high alert, ready to assist with emergency response missions if necessary.

Several districts, including Puri, Khordha, and Cuttack, are preparing for substantial impacts from Cyclone Dana. While officials urge the populace to comply with safety regulations, many are doing whatever they can to secure their homes and belongings to weather the coming storm.

This situation continues to evolve, with more updates expected as Dana’s precise path and intensity are confirmed. The joint efforts by the governments of Odisha and West Bengal highlight the seriousness of this impending cyclone, reminding residents to stay informed and prepared.
