Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season Two Officially Announced

CD Projekt RED and Studio TRIGGER reveal a darker, standalone sequel with new characters set in Night City

Fans of the groundbreaking anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners have reason to celebrate as CD Projekt RED and Studio TRIGGER officially announced the production of a second season during Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles. The announcement came during a lively panel titled "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators," held on July 4, featuring key figures such as story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, voice actors Emi Lo and Zach Aguilar, and director Hiroyuki Imaishi.

Despite the first season’s conclusive and intense ending, which left fans wondering if a sequel was even possible, the creators confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now in production. However, as Sztybor humorously cautioned, “Don’t get too excited, David’s dead,” referring to the original protagonist David Martinez’s fate in season one. Instead, the new season promises a fresh narrative with a “younger, fresher” cast of characters, expanding the dark and gritty world of Night City.

Studio TRIGGER, renowned for its dynamic animation style, is returning to helm the project, with Kai Ikarashi stepping into the director’s role for the first time. Ikarashi, who previously directed episode six of the original series, shared a Director’s Voice video expressing his enthusiasm for the sequel and his vision for the new installment. The series will consist of 10 episodes and is described as a standalone story that will be “sadder,” “darker,” and more intense than its predecessor.

The creative team behind the project includes lead character designer Kanno Ichigo, known for her work on the original season and other acclaimed titles like Promare, and Masahiko Otsuka, who is responsible for adapting the screenplay. Together, they aim to craft a “raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge,” as Sztybor put it, promising something unlike anything the franchise has done before.

While the exact release date remains under wraps, the announcement was accompanied by the unveiling of the anime’s official logo and poster art, generating excitement among fans worldwide. Additionally, a teaser trailer, described as “too bloody” for the main panel, was slated for a closed-door viewing at the Peacock Theater during TRIGGER’s adult-oriented panel later that evening.

The announcement follows a series of developments surrounding the Cyberpunk universe, including the release of a prequel manga titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness earlier in 2025. This expansion of the franchise reflects CD Projekt RED’s ongoing commitment to enriching Night City’s lore across multiple media platforms.

Originally, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was conceived as a standalone work, with producer Satoru Honma previously stating that there were no plans for a second season. Yet, the overwhelming success and critical acclaim of the 2022 anime—boasting a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% approval rating from fans—made a sequel inevitable. The first season also won Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award, cementing its status as a landmark in anime and gaming culture.

CD Projekt RED CEO Michał Nowakowski hinted at the possibility of more animation projects within the Cyberpunk universe back in August 2024, saying, “We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk, so I hope that’s enough as an answer. So, expect to see more for sure.” Although he did not confirm if that project was the same as Edgerunners 2, the latest announcement clarifies the studio’s direction.

Set in the neon-lit, dystopian world of Night City, the original series followed David Martinez, a struggling student who transforms into an Edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw fighting for survival. The new season is expected to explore different facets of this sprawling metropolis, diving deeper into its dark underbelly with a fresh perspective.

The tagline for the upcoming season, “When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?” hints at a narrative rich with emotional depth and moral complexity, promising to captivate audiences anew.

As anticipation builds, fans can keep up with the latest news through the official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners website and social media channels. The collaboration between CD Projekt RED and Studio TRIGGER continues to push the boundaries of anime storytelling, blending cutting-edge animation with the immersive world of Cyberpunk 2077.

With production underway and a talented team at the helm, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is poised to become another defining chapter in the Cyberpunk saga. While David Martinez’s story has ended, Night City’s shadows promise countless new tales waiting to be told.
