Curtis Baptist And Zillah Capture State Basketball Titles

Historic victories mark significant milestones for high school basketball teams across the states.

The excitement of high school girls basketball took center stage recently across various states, spotlighting remarkable athletic achievements and the drive of young athletes to succeed. From Curtis Baptist’s historic win to Zillah's resounding triumph, these games underscored the determination and talent found in high school sports.

It was Friday when Curtis Baptist High School faced off against Wardlaw Academy at the Sumter Civic Center for the 1A SCISA state championship. The anticipation was palpable, and for Curtis Baptist, this was not just another game; it marked the culmination of many years of hard work and perseverance. The Crusaders, led by senior Jaliyah Terry—who stands as the school’s all-time leading scorer—charged onto the court with fervor. They quickly established dominance, ending the first half with a significant lead over their opponents.

Head Coach Tim Johnson expressed his pride and excitement following the triumph, stating, “That was the beginning. Just if you believe in the idea we can sort of be in control from the very beginning.” The team's preparation paid off as they executed their game plan, leading to Terry and fellow player Maci Butler turning the game around and extending their lead to 20 points by the final quarter.

Johnson's jubilation was evident after the victory, as the Crusaders claimed the state title with a decisive score of 56-36. This victory also marked Johnson’s first major championship win as head coach, and he reflected on the path leading to this moment, saying, “I’m seeing athletes right now who came out from years prior...they're here supporting the program.” The elation of winning the championship was palpable, underscoring the importance of teamwork and dedication.

Across the country, another notable championship—the Class 1A District 5 title—unfolded at Wenatchee High School. Here, Zillah High School's girls basketball team showcased why they are considered formidable contenders. With underclassmen talent shining brightly, freshman Bella Valadez and sophomore Makenna Klitzke led the Leopards to victory against Cashmere, with Valadez scoring 22 points and Klitzke contributing 21 of their team total, resulting in a 69-36 victory.

Zillah's achievement marks their first district championship since 2022, with sophomore Angelina Buck also making significant contributions, scoring 16 points. Their combined forces were too much for the Cashmere defense, demonstrating both skill and composure. Their solid record this year stands at 20-3, and they await their seeding for the upcoming state championship.

The Zillah boys team, unfortunately, faced defeat against Royal with a final score of 73-59, marking this event as bittersweet for the school. Nonetheless, the girls’ team secured their state berth, leading the community to rally around their victorious female athletes.

Both Curtis Baptist and Zillah highlight the passion and community spirit often found in high school sports. The coaches and players serve as role models, inspiring not just their teammates but also supportive fans and young athletes watching closely, hoping to experience similar triumphs.

The excitement of high school basketball is contagious, reflecting the battles fought on the court and the dedication required off it. Winners celebrated their victories, coaches reveled in the fruits of their labor, and fans experienced the emotion and heart of high school athletics at its finest. This championship season has unearthed promising talents and revealed the rigorous training and commitment necessary to stand atop the podium.

With each basket scored and each cheer from the crowd, these student-athletes are building more than just records; they are crafting memories and forging futures—one game at a time.
