Cumbria Authorities Announce Road Safety Measures And Closures

Multiple roadworks and camera van deployments set to impact travel this January.

Motorists traveling through Cumbria should be aware of upcoming road safety measures and various roadworks scheduled for January. Cumbria Police have announced the deployment of Road Safety Camera vans at several key locations, and Cumberland Council has scheduled significant roadwork closures across the region.

On Saturday, January 4, Cumbria Police revealed the operating locations for their Road Safety Camera vans. These vans will be set up to monitor traffic on the M6 Motorway between Junctions 35 and 38, along with major routes such as the A6 north from Kendal, the A65, and the A66 east of Penrith. A police spokesperson urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads, stating, "Please drive carefully." This initiative is part of the police's efforts to promote safer driving practices throughout the region.

Roadworks across Cumbria will also affect traffic. Notable works include the closure of English Street in Carlisle, which will be shut down from January 6 until April 27 due to the Southern Gateway Project. While the road will be closed, access will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists. Motorists are advised to utilize signed alternative routes through nearby streets, including The Crescent and Lowther Street.

Additional roadworks are planned at the signalized junction of Georgian Way and Victoria Place from January 6 to January 17, likely leading to delays as multi-way traffic signals will be implemented during this period.

Further disruptions are expected due to partial closures on Cumwhinton Drive, which will be occurring until January 10 between 8 AM and 5:30 PM. This closure is necessary for drainage works being carried out by Metcalfe Civil Engineering. Travelers can expect alternative routes through the unrestricted sections of Cumwhinton Drive, Garlands Road, and Cumwhinton Road.

Also, drivers should prepare for lane closures by Junction 41 on the M6 from January 6 through January 7 due to maintenance and utility repairs by National Highways, with potential delays anticipated during this time.

Other roadworks include upcoming activities on Main Street, Cleator, where Openreach will be completing roadworks on January 8. Two-way signals will be established to control traffic flow, and delays are expected.

Effective January 9 and 10, the road from Cleator Moor to Ennerdale Bridge will experience closures for pole maintenance performed by Openreach. Appropriate signage will direct motorists through alternative routes.

An important closure is scheduled on the A595, which will be implemented between Holmrook and Ravenglass, commencing January 6, with night-time work underway until February 22. During this period, the A595 will be closed from 7 PM to 5 AM to resurface the carriageway, and daytime speed limits will be enforced.

Given the various roadworks and safety monitoring initiatives currently being implemented, Cumbria Police and Cumberland Council advise travelers to remain vigilant and patient during their commutes. Authorities urge all motorists to plan their journeys accordingly, adhering to road signs and speed limits to navigate the changes effectively.
