Culinary Journeys Await: Explore Indonesia's Rich Flavors

From Depot Sameen's traditional delights to Aston Hotel's Ramadan feasts, culinary tourism thrives.

Indonesia’s culinary scene is making significant strides as new dining experiences meld traditional flavors with modern dining concepts. Recently, Depot Sameen celebrated its grand opening on February 21, 2025, located conveniently within Blok M, Jakarta. This restaurant stands out not just for its cozy ambiance, decorated to evoke nostalgia with traditional Javanese elements, but for its commitment to showcasing the rich tastes of Central Java.

Owned by Eko Yuliarto Prabowo, Depot Sameen offers signature dishes among which Opor Ayam and Rawon take center stage. The owner emphasizes the unique twist Blora’s version of Rawon presents, which is distinguished by the addition of coconut milk and daun melinjo, enhancing its savory flavors. Eko expresses pride in introducing these traditional dishes, noting, "Kami juga mengangkat cita rasa Blora tentunya sebagai salah satu kekayaan Nusantara yang coba kita explore," highlighting his dedication to preserving and sharing regional culinary heritage.

Patrons are greeted not only by the authentic food but by staff dressed in traditional Samin attire, enhancing the immersive dining experience. The restaurant also specifies service areas on three different floors to cater to varied dining preferences—from nostalgic settings for families to contemporary spaces suitable for millennial gatherings, complete with interactive media such as music and television.

But it’s not just Depot Sameen leading the culinary adventure this Ramadan. The Aston Hotel Banyuwangi has unveiled its own delightful offering with the theme “Cerita Rasa Nusantara,” aiming to enchant guests with culinary excellence throughout the holy month. Catur Rahmadi, the hotel’s General Manager, announced the unique theme reflects their appreciation for Indonesian cuisine, stating, "Tema ini adalah apresiasi kami kepada makanan khas nusantara. Dimana makanan nusantara yang disajikan akan mengajak berpetualang menjelajahi rasa untuk nanti menjadi cerita yang tak terlupakan."

This event will present eight rotating menus inspired by flavors from various regions across Indonesia, with over 100 delectable dishes for guests to savor. Catur also pointed out, "Pembeda 'Cerita Rasa Nusantara' tahun ini terletak pada penambahan rotasi menu setiap harinya," emphasizing the innovative and diverse offerings aimed to captivate attendees at every meal.

Among the highlights this Ramadan will also be offerings from traditional Middle Eastern cuisine, enriching the cultural experience for guests. Diners can set their palates on culinary journeys from the rich dishes of Java to the vibrant tastes of Padang, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Meanwhile, with the increasing attention to Indonesia's own tourism assets, the appointment of Mikha Tambayong as Taiwan's first Tourism Ambassador to Indonesia captures the spirit of this cultural exchange. During the launch event, Mikha expressed her willingness to promote Taiwan as an inviting travel destination. Upon visiting Taiwan, she remarked, "Taiwan adalah pulau yang diberkahi dengan penuh keindahan oleh Tuhan," reflecting on the beauty and charm she encountered.

Her role involves enticing more Indonesian tourists to explore Taiwan’s vast culture, cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes. By cultivating these experiences, Mikha aspires to create opportunities for deepening the ties between the two nations, showcasing Taiwan's welcoming environment, especially for Muslim travelers.

The combined initiatives from Depot Sameen and Aston Hotel underline the importance of culinary experiences as influential vectors for tourism in Indonesia. Both ventures aim to reintroduce classic dishes to younger generations and represent the nation’s vast diversity. This focus on culinary heritage not only enhances the local dining scene but also encourages tourism—both domestic and international.

By providing platforms for culinary appreciation, Indonesia positions itself favorably within the global tourism framework, inviting the world to taste its rich flavors. Whether through the nostalgic offerings of Depot Sameen or the acclaimed culinary culture showcased at Aston Hotel, it's clear the heart of Indonesia beats vibrantly within its culinary domain.

With tantalizing options awaiting diners this Ramadan and beyond, and influential ambassadors sparking interest abroad, Indonesia’s gastronomical adventures are set to flourish.
