Burt, perhaps one of the most famous crocodiles in the world, has died at the ripe old age of around 90. The beast-come-celebrity was the reptilian star of the 1986 movie Crocodile Dundee about an eccentric Aussie bushman’s antics in New York City. The sad news of his passing was shared by Crocosaurus Cove, the wildlife center in Darwin where he’s been living since 2008.
“Known for his independent nature, Burt was a confirmed bachelor – an attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm. His fiery temperament earned him the respect of his caretakers and visitors alike, as he embodied the raw and untamed spirit of the saltwater crocodile,” they posted on Instagram.
“Burt was truly one of a kind. He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures,” they added.
Crocodile Dundee wasn’t Burt’s only run-in with fame. According to Crocosaurus Cove, he was reportedly used as the basis for the digital effects in the 2007 killer-croc film Rogue, plus he successfully predicted France would win the 2018 FIFA World Cup (despite showing some blatant Australian bias in the early stages of the tournament).
His exact age is unclear, as he was captured at an unknown age in the 1980s in the waters of Reynolds River in Australia's Northern Territory. Experts estimate he was probably approaching a century, and during these decades of life, he amassed immense size. From snoot to tail, he measured around 5.1 meters (16 feet 8 inches) and weighed 700 kilograms (1,543 pounds).
Burt was a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), a species of crocodilian native to India's east coast, Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and parts of Micronesia. Known as the largest living reptile on Earth, it is no wonder they’re regarded as the kings of crocs.
His legacy as one of the film’s standout stars began with his appearance attacking Linda Kozlowski's character near the riverbank, establishing himself as not just any crocodile but the crocodile of Crocodile Dundee.
After his 1986 debut, Burt hung out at various wildlife parks before becoming the star at Crocosaurus Cove, which he joined in 2008. His commanding presence made him popular among visitors, especially during feeding times.
“While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited over the years,” said Crocosaurus Cove.
The park holds plans to honor Burt's legacy with the installation of a commemorative sign celebrating his extraordinary life and the tales he shared throughout his time at the park. “We are reminded of the role wildlife plays in our shared history and the importance of preserving it for future generations,” they commented.
The impact of Burt's presence extended beyond mere entertainment; he helped shape Australia’s image as home to rugged natural beauty and spectacular wildlife. His life story embodies strength and resilience, with his unique character contributing to a growing appreciation for crocodiles and their ecosystem.
“Burt’s life story is one of strength, resilience, and a personality as bold as the Top End itself,” said the park’s team, noting the combination of his charm and ferocity earned him the admiration of caretakers and visitors alike.
Even as he passed on, Burt leaves behind memories steeped within the hearts of those who encountered him at the park. “Visitors from around the globe marveled at his impressive size and commanding presence, especially at feeding time,” Crocosaurus Cove stated.
His reach of fame also prompted fun predictions around sporting events, where Burt showcased his surprising aptitude at guessing outcomes. Most famously, he accurately predicted France’s win at the 2018 World Cup.
The croc's life spanned decades, making him not only one of the oldest saltwater crocodiles on record but also bridging generations of crocodile enthusiasts who adored his appearance, whether on-screen or as the star attraction of Crocosaurus Cove.
“We plan to honor Burt's legacy with what will surely have great significance for our visitors and fans around the world,” said Crocosaurus Cove.
While Burt has left this world, his memory as the unforgettable crocodile star will forever remain. Fans of the movie and wildlife lovers alike will certainly miss this extraordinary reptilian star.
