On March 22, 2025, at 7:02 AM, a crane truck struck a light rail power cable, causing significant disruptions to light rail services in Tin Shui Wai. The accident occurred between Tin Yiu Station and Tin Wing Station as the truck traveled along Tin Wah Road towards Tin Tsz Road. Initial investigations suggested that the crane truck, which was allegedly overloaded, caused the crane arm to protrude and hit the overhead cable, leading to its damage.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the accident; however, approximately 80 passengers aboard a passing light rail train were evacuated as a precaution. The MTR Corporation quickly announced the suspension of light rail services near Tin Yiu Station due to the damage to the overhead power cable, which disrupted the power supply critical for operations.
In response to the incident, MTR is actively working to repair the damage, estimating that the restoration process could take several hours. MTR spokespersons stated, "The overhead cable damage has affected power supply, and MTR is working to repair the damage, which is expected to take several hours." The corporation reported the incident to the authorities and has arranged for free shuttle buses to accommodate affected passengers.
Service adjustments were necessary as light rail routes faced diversions. Specifically, routes 705 and 706 will not stop at Tin Yiu Station and Tin Heng Station, while route 751 will not stop between Shui Pin Wai and Tin Shui Wai Stations. To ensure passenger convenience, shuttle buses are operating for those traveling along routes 705 and 706, enabling them to navigate around the affected areas.
Local authorities have also taken note of the incident. The 41-year-old driver of the crane truck, identified as Poon, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, and investigations are ongoing to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident better.
