Craig Melvin Steps Up As New TODAY Show Co-Anchor

Melvin replaces Hoda Kotb as the morning show evolves with upcoming changes

Craig Melvin has officially been named the new co-anchor of the TODAY Show, stepping up to take over from Hoda Kotb, who is set to leave the show early next year. The announcement, made during the broadcast on November 14th, has stirred excitement and nostalgia among fans and colleagues alike.

Melvin will join current co-anchor Savannah Guthrie on the show’s morning broadcast, covering the 7 and 8 AM hours starting January 13, 2025. This time slot will be pivotal for delivering news and engaging discussions as the show continues to evolve. Hoda Kotb, who has been one of the show’s most beloved faces since 2018, cited her desire to spend more time with family as the driving reason for her departure. “My heart is so full,” Kotb expressed about her time on the program. “I love this job and everything it has brought to my life.”

With nearly 14 years at NBC, Melvin brings significant experience to this role. He has been well-regarded for his work on the show and frequently hosts the third hour alongside fellow anchors Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones. His transition to co-anchor seems to have garnered support from all corners of the NBC family.

During the on-air announcement, Kotb praised Melvin highly. “You are made for this job. You are literally made for this job. You have all the things this role requires.” Melvin reciprocated the sentiment, stating, “It means so much to inherit this from you. You’ve helped save the show, and I can’t wait to continue this legacy alongside you.” The affection shared between the two emphasizes the close-knit atmosphere of the TODAY Show team.

Hoda’s final day as co-anchor is set for January 10, 2025, which marks the end of her notable run on the program. She began her co-anchor tenure after Matt Lauer's controversial departure, reestablishing the show's reputation and bringing warmth and engagement to audiences around the world.

Beyond the transition of co-host roles, the TODAY Show is also undergoing additional changes. Following Kotb’s exit, the fourth hour currently led by her and Jenna Bush Hager will be revamped to feature “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” showcasing various guest hosts until the network decides on a permanent co-host.

Reflecting on the changes, Melvin expressed immense gratitude, stating, “I am beyond excited and grateful. I thank NBC for this opportunity and have enjoyed a lifetime of blessings leading to this moment.”

He also took time to highlight his roots, mentioning his family’s struggles and triumphs. Melvin’s father, who was born in prison and overcame addiction, and his mother, who worked hard to provide for their family, played significant roles in shaping his character and drive. He noted the importance of these experiences, stating, “These people did not define me but inspired me.”

Supportive words from fellow co-anchor Al Roker underscored Melvin’s promotion. Roker, who participated virtually during the announcement, shared a memorable moment they had together during the 2018 Winter Olympics, when he recognized Melvin's potential. “This is it, you’re here, you’ve got it all,” Roker reassured him at the time, evidencing the longstanding camaraderie at the network.

Melvin is committed not only to delivering the news but also to fostering engaging discussions with viewers. His distinct approach reflects the values of the TODAY Show, which has emphasized connection and community throughout its history.

Fans of the show are abuzz with anticipation for the upcoming changes and have taken to social media to express their excitement. Many have shared fond memories of both Kotb and Melvin, emphasizing the impact they’ve had on the morning news format.

The renomination of Craig Melvin as the new co-anchor highlights the dynamic nature of television journalism, where new opportunities arise alongside changes. Fans of the TODAY Show are eager to see how Melvin and Guthrie will navigate the upcoming year together, and many are optimistic about the fresh energy he’ll bring to the show.

With Melvin at the helm alongside Guthrie, viewers can expect engaging segments, heartwarming moments, and the comfortable dynamic audiences cherish from their morning news shows. The TODAY Show has long been known for its lively discussions, breaking news coverage, and warm interactions, and Melvin’s appointment signifies the network’s commitment to continuing this tradition.

The new chapter begins soon, ushering viewers toward another promising era for NBC's drive-time staple. Indeed, Craig Melvin's ascent marks not just personal achievement but also evolution within the show itself, as he embraces the platform to inspire others, reflecting on struggles past and celebrating the present.
