The train, identified as part of the Series 8500, derailed near the Botujuru station after colliding with mud from the landslide during its preparation to begin service. According to the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM), heavy rains had affected the metropolitan region of São Paulo prior to the accident, leading to excessive rainfall.
