Costco Issues Recall Of Kirkland Signature Eggs Due To Salmonella Risk

Over 10,000 egg cartons recalled across multiple states amid health concerns.

Costco has recently initiated a voluntary recall of over 10,800 units of its Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs due to concerns over potential contamination with Salmonella, the bacterial infection linked to food poisoning.

This recall affects Costco locations across five states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, with the eggs distributed starting from November 22, 2024. Handsome Brook Farms, based in New York, issued the recall notice on November 27, when it was revealed the eggs were mistakenly packaged and distributed.

Consumers can identify these affected eggs by specific information on the packaging, including the UPC number 9661910680, and the Julian code 327, which is marked alongside the use-by date of January 5, 2025. These details can be found on the side of the plastic cartons, which are distinctively labeled with the Kirkland Signature brand.

Salmonella infections can result in serious health consequences and have resulted in approximately 26,000 hospitalizations and 400 deaths each year across the United States. Though no illnesses have been reported related to this specific product at this time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class 1. This classification indicates there is reasonable probability of exposure to the contaminated product leading to adverse health effects.

Health officials warn the risks of Salmonella infection are particularly high for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, which can start as soon as six hours and up to six days after ingesting contaminated food.

According to the CDC, "Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections" especially among those noted vulnerable groups. Most cases of Salmonella result in mild illness, but complications can arise, leading to prolonged health issues.

Following the recall announcement, the FDA’s investigation remains active. Officials have yet to confirm whether the affected eggs tested positive for Salmonella. Consumers who purchased these eggs are advised not to consume them, even if they appear to be intact. Instead, the FDA strongly urges returning the cartons to your local Costco store for a full refund.

For consumers needing assistance, Handsome Brook Farms encourages contacting their customer service at (646) 733-4532, ext. 1, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, or via email at [email protected].

This recall is particularly significant as it highlights the continued importance of food safety awareness. Salmonella can be effectively avoided with thorough cooking methods, such as ensuring eggs reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). The FDA emphasizes the necessity of proper food handling practices to protect public health.

Handsome Brook Farms is reportedly taking steps to improve its supply chain controls and consumer safety, aiming to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Consumers are reminded to stay informed about any recalls affecting the products they purchase, especially during this season, when many families frequently use eggs for holiday meals. Constant vigilance is key to ensuring food safety and preventing outbreaks of foodborne illnesses.
