Congo is currently grappling with the unsettling outbreak of a mysterious flu-like disease, which has claimed the lives of over 143 individuals within merely two weeks. This alarming situation has prompted health authorities to sound the alarm as they investigate the causes and spread of the illness.
The disease, predominantly affecting the southern Kwango province, has raised significant concern due to its rapid and deadly progression. According to reports, health officials noted the increasing death toll as families are advised against touching their deceased loved ones amid fears of transmission.
Congo's health minister, Roger Kamba, declared the government is on high alert over the disease, with symptoms resembling respiratory issues alongside fever, headaches, cough, and anemia. “The Congolese government is on general alert,” Kamba stated, emphasizing the urgency without detailing the exact nature of the disease.
Healthcare officials have confirmed 71 deaths so far, out of which 27 occurred in hospitals and 44 within the community. Many of those who died faced delays or shortages of medical aid. Reports indicate ten patients succumbed to their conditions primarily due to insufficient blood transfusions, with 17 others facing respiratory distress.
This tragic toll has unfolded between November 10 and November 25, with around 380 reported cases, nearly half being children under the age of five. Local residents recounted harrowing experiences, as one Panzi resident, Claude Niongo, shared the heartbreaking loss of his wife and seven-year-old daughter. He described their symptoms, stating, “I only noticed high fevers, vomiting… and then death.”
Healthcare infrastructure is proving inadequate to manage the situation, with local hospitals reported as severely under-equipped. Lucien Lufutu, president of the civil society consultation framework of Kwango province, lamented, “There is a lack of medicines and medical supplies. Most of the population is treated by traditional practitioners.”
The Panzi health zone, where the outbreak has been concentrated, is relatively isolated, making access to healthcare tricky. Epidemiological experts took two days to arrive at the site to begin sample collection and analysis as the investigation continues. “The health system is quite weak, but we are waiting for the first results,” Kamba noted.
While investigating this flu-like illness, authorities remain vigilant about another existing health crisis—the m-pox epidemic affecting the region since early this year. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported more than 47,000 suspected m-pox cases within the country, with over 1,000 deaths connected to this disease alone. Kamba indicated, “At the current stage, we cannot speak of large-scale epidemic, we must wait for the results of the samples taken,” hinting at the delicate phase of assessment against the backdrop of existing health threats.
