Companies Transform Health Benefits For Employee Wellbeing

Post-pandemic trends show organizations prioritizing mental health and telehealth services

According to SHRM's 2024 Employee Benefits Survey, about 97% of employers are providing health plan coverage. This overwhelming percentage stands out, considering mandates to offer insurance have been set by the Affordable Care Act.

Despite such coverage, the way health plans are structured has evolved. Employers are now integrating telehealth and mental health services, reflecting changing workforce needs.

Johnny C. Taylor, SHRM President, mentioned, "Two key factors turbocharged the importance of health care benefits. The first is the realization of how wellness initiatives can lower costs, and the second is the telehealth revolution, largely accelerated by the pandemic."

Previously, between 2017 and 2020, the perceived importance of these benefits dipped slightly. The reductions were correlated with retirement and financial benefits rising to equal stature, which was unexpected.

Alonso, SHRM's Chief Data & Insights Officer, noted, "Everyone experienced the mental health aspects of COVID, whether it was burnout or dealing with isolation." Such widespread challenges have had lasting impacts, especially among parents trying to support struggling children.

About 90% of employers now offer mental health benefits, showcasing the drastic change from pre-pandemic practices. This shift speaks volumes about the significant mental and emotional toll taken during lockdowns.

Employers have also recognized the need for family care benefits. Including care leave for family members can alleviate costs, as many healthcare expenses arise from dependents rather than employees themselves.

Family care benefits help employees deal with stress, yielding valuable results not only for individuals but the organization as well. Employees who can participate more freely in family care manage stress levels and improve mental wellness.

Directly addressing the pandemic's impact on children has become another consideration for companies. Many children saw their education disrupted, and this may have far-reaching effects on the future workforce.
