Community Rallies For Missing Freediver Drake Sweet

With search efforts suspended, family and friends launch GoFundMe for private mission.

NAPLES, Fla. (WWSB) - The search for 36-year-old freediver Drake Sweet has taken a heartbreaking turn, as the United States Coast Guard has suspended efforts to locate him following his disappearance off the coast of Naples, Florida. Sweet went missing on March 13, 2025, when he failed to resurface during a freediving session with a friend approximately 69 miles west of Naples.

Despite exhaustive search efforts covering around 4,275 square miles, the Coast Guard called off the search on March 15, stating they would reevaluate if new information arises. "Pending the development of new information," the agency noted, crews were forced to halt operations due to poor visibility conditions.

While Sweet's friend, who was with him during the outing, managed to make it back safely, the uncertainty surrounding his fate has cast shadows over his family and friends. The Coast Guard confirmed through their spokesperson, "Unless new information is received, the search will remain suspended." This announcement has left Sweet's loved ones desperately seeking alternative ways to continue the search.

To raise funds for this private endeavor, Sweet’s family has created a GoFundMe campaign, which has shown remarkable support. By March 17, over $107,000 had been raised, showcasing not only the family's determination but also the community's solidarity during this difficult time. The GoFundMe organizer, Corina Foese, shared the campaign’s mission: "We’re raising funds to support continued private sector search for Drake Sweet until he is home." The funds will be utilized for resources such as fuel, chartering boats, and potentially hiring search and rescue experts.

This family-led search effort aims to employ advanced sonar technology, incorporating the Yellowfin side scan sonar system, which is scheduled for use this week. The GoFundMe update indicated plans for secondary dives, using expertise from search and rescue professionals who specialize in these types of searches.

Foese has emphasized the need for aerial support, stating, "We need support via planes, helicopters, and boat-launched drones to continue our search on March 18 through March 20 as conditions allow." With the forecast predicting deterioration of weather, the urgency of their efforts cannot be overstated. Foese expressed her gratitude for the community’s support as they navigate this unimaginable situation.

A concerning aspect of Sweet’s disappearance is how environmental conditions may influence search patterns. According to data provided by the Coast Guard concerning weather buoys from Drake’s last known location, they noted there is evidence of north/westerly drift patterns on the water's surface. Fizzy statements like, "Our searches do not need to come closer to shore, but rather out to the north and west," elaborate the necessity to adjust their search strategy for maximum effectiveness.

The remarkable support for the search has also shed light on the nature of freediving, the method of underwater exploration utilizing only the air contained within one's lungs. This practice involves tools such as masks, snorkels, and fins, needing highly careful arrangements for safe participation. Safety tips for freediving include maintaining direct supervision over divers immediately after resurfacing, ensuring proper buoyancy, and having well-practiced procedures for emergencies.

Hundreds have rallied behind the family, underscoring the community spirit and efforts to bring Drake back home. Family statements reflect the emotional turmoil endured as they hold hope for his safe return. "Every dollar donated has made tremendous impact," Foese emphasized, indicating how such contributions aid not just financially but provide emotional bolstering to the family during this traumatic time.

Drake Sweet’s searching story continues to develop as new information may arise. The efforts of the Coast Guard, alongside those spearheaded by his family and community, represent the multi-faceted approach taken to address the realities of this tragic search.

For now, the family and their supporters remain vigilant, praying for the safe return of Drake Sweet and expressing their heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed and supported these search efforts. Only time will clarify the outcomes of their endeavors, but the commitment from both family and community is abundantly evident.
