On February 25, 2025, the communities of New Market, Tennessee, and surrounding areas mourned the loss of John Neal Scarlett and Alfred "Andy" Kenny, two remarkable individuals whose lives, though different, were marked by deep love and commitment to family.
John Neal Scarlett, 59, was known for his loyalty and service. Born and raised in Jefferson County, Tennessee, John Neal dedicated his life to farming, taking pride as both a dairyman and row crop farmer. According to his family, "John Neal was a loyal, loving husband, father, and friend," embodying the spirit of the community he served.
After graduating from Jefferson County High School in 1983, John Neal attended the University of Tennessee, where he cultivated not just agricultural skills but also relationships. He became actively involved with the Tennessee Young Farmers and Ranchers Association, eventually leading as chairman. His exceptional dedication earned him the title of Tennessee Young Farmer of the Year and recognition as runner-up for the National Young Farmer of the Year.
John Neal's public service extended beyond farming. He served as a longstanding member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau Board and contributed to the Jefferson County School Board. His involvement deepened when he took on significant roles, including the budget committee chairman and zoning committee member within the County Commission. John Neal's influence was felt widely, as he tirelessly advocated for the agricultural community and the region's future.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Scarlett, their children, John Ryan and Jackie, and his brother Robert, along with his family. Pallbearers at his funeral included family and friends who recognized and cherished the impact he had on their lives.
The family invited friends to celebrate John Neal's life at Farrar Funeral Home on Feb 27, where receiving of friends took place from 10 am to 2 pm, followed by funeral services. Burial will follow at New Market Cemetery. Donations requested by his family will support agricultural education initiatives.
Meanwhile, the life of Alfred "Andy" Kenny was also being remembered with affection and warmth. Andy passed away at the age of 34 on the same day. Celebrated for his essence and spirit, he was embraced by his loving family after being welcomed at age 11. Andy’s legacy is centered around his fierce connection to family and love for life.
Born on August 28, 1990, Andy impressed those around him with his unwavering strength facing numerous medical challenges. Family members recalled, "you were braver than you believed, stronger than you knew and smarter than you thought. You were loved beyond measure. Goodbye old friend, and 'may the force be with you.'" This heartfelt farewell beautifully captures the spirit of Andy's life.
From his childhood interests for Star Wars to building Lego sets and indulging his love for movies and gaming, Andy left memories filled with joy and affection. Family gatherings frequently featured Andy setting up the gaming console or choosing the perfect movie to enjoy with loved ones, filled with pop and bubble gum by his side—simple pleasures for him, but cherished moments for everyone involved.
Though both John Neal and Andy had diverse experiences and challenges, they shared one commonality: the immense love of family surrounding them. Their stories serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing those we hold dear.
Residents and family from both communities continue to honor and celebrate their memories through reflection, emphasizing how deeply they were woven within the fabric of their lives.
