On March 21, 2025, the Indian Ocean economic community mourned the passing of Mohamed Ismaël Jina, a prominent figure in the business realm of La Réunion and Madagascar, known for transforming a family business into a major fashion player. He passed away at the age of 49, leaving behind an impactful legacy of entrepreneurship and community engagement.
Jina, who led the Jina Chaussures group, was not only recognized for his business acumen but also for his significant contributions to social initiatives. He was a longstanding member of the board of directors of the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises of La Réunion (CPME) and served as the vice-president of commerce. His active involvement extended to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of La Réunion, where he previously chaired the Finance Committee.
Born into a family of entrepreneurs, Jina took over the reins of the family business at just 17 years old. It was in 1997 that he purchased the sole proprietorship established by his father, Razahoussen Ismaël Jina, two years following the patriarch’s death. Under his leadership, the group expanded significantly, moving from its initial focus on footwear to include ready-to-wear fashion, becoming a key player in the local commerce scene.
Over the years, Jina expanded the group further, adding renowned franchises and creating around 150 jobs in the region. However, like many businesses, the Jina group faced challenges, recently closing three shoe stores due to the adverse economic climate exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The news of Jina’s death has resonated deeply with many. Statements from various community leaders highlight his transformational impact not just on individual lives but on the wider economic landscape of La Réunion. Huguette Bello, the President of the Réunion Region, expressed her respect and admiration, stating, “His exemplary journey will remain an inspiration for all those who work to build a prosperous and supportive island community.”
Erika Bareigts, the Mayor of Saint-Denis, also shared her condolences, noting Jina's vision in developing the economy of Réunion and his extensive contributions to the local community. “His determination allowed the Jina group to grow beyond its origins, spreading its influence to Mayotte and Madagascar,” she remarked.
In the wake of his passing, the Union of Khojas Shia Isnashri Associations in Réunion (UAKSIR) issued a heartfelt tribute, commending Jina’s unwavering dedication and generosity towards the community. “He was a devoted servant of the community, always prioritizing collective needs and available to listen to everyone,” said UAKSIR President Aly Asgaraly. “Our community loses a precious man whose commitment will remain an example for us all.”
Farid Mangrolia, a prominent opposition spokesperson, paid tribute to Jina’s influential role as a business leader in Réunion’s economy. “His departure leaves a huge void among us and we are all deeply saddened by this loss,” he remarked. “His humor, wisdom, leadership, and commitment inspired many.”
The CPME also expressed its sorrow, recognizing Jina as a pillar of the local business community. “Our friend and administrator Mohamedraza ISMAEL JINA will be profoundly missed. He was not only a great entrepreneur but also a vital figure in our island's social and economic life. We will be eternally grateful for his contributions,” stated President Gérard Lebon.
Jina's individual journey reflects a broader narrative of ambition and social responsibility, presenting him as a beacon of hope and an example of leadership for future generations. His legacy will live on significantly through the enterprises he established and the community projects he supported.
In a world increasingly focused on community, Jina’s life serves as a reminder of the potential for personal success intertwined with the well-being of others. Tributes continue to pour in from all corners of the society expressing deep loss, highlighting not only his professional achievements but the warmth and decency he brought into the lives of those around him.
The Jina family and the community at large will hold a funeral service, where many are expected to gather and pay their respects to a man who was not only important to business but vital to community spirit. As La Réunion navigates through this difficult time, the principles Jina stood for will undoubtedly guide and inspire new leaders facing the challenges ahead.
