Communities Unite For Madonna Celebrations Amid Jubilee Preparations

Faithful gather to honor the Madonna, reinforcing communal bonds and spirituality during significant religious events.

The city of Potenza warmly welcomed the image of the Madonna di Viggiano, Patroness of Basilicata, to celebrate the beginning of the 2025 Jubilee Year, proclaimed by the Diocese. This important event marks the start of a period dedicated to reconciliation, spirituality, and solidarity, inviting faithful and pilgrims to undertake a path of inner growth and renewal.

The Madonna di Viggiano, symbol of protection for all of Basilicata, is an integral part of the cultural and artistic heritage of the Lucanian community. The celebrations began with a solemn welcome at Torre Guevara, where the statue officially opened the events linked to the Jubilee Year of the Diocese of Potenza, Muro Lucano, and Marsico Nuovo.

During the procession, the effigy of the "Queen and Patroness of Lucania" was accompanied to the church, where Archbishop Davide Carbonaro presided over the Mass. During his homily, he urged the faithful to view the doors of their homes as symbolic signs of the Holy Doors. Meanwhile, at 5 PM, the Eucharistic celebration at the cathedral of Potenza officially marked the opening of the diocesan Jubilee. Concurrently, at the cathedral of Matera, Monsignor Giuseppe Caiazzo, Archbishop of Matera-Irsina and Bishop of Tricarico, celebrated a similar function.

This event is not limited to being merely a religious manifestation, but also serves as an occasion to strengthen unity and the sense of belonging among Lucanians. The celebrations aim to reaffirm the values of faith, hope, and solidarity, encouraging reflection on their significance in daily life. The sacred image of the Madonna of the Sacred Mountain of Viggiano will remain on display at the cathedral of Potenza until January 6.

The Jubilee will also feature the Peregrinatio Mariae to local healthcare facilities. The effigy of the Madonna d’Oropa will visit hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and prisons, promoting hope through this pilgrimage of care. Following Mass presided over by Bishop Fabio De Lorenzo, the commitment to visit the sick and elderly throughout the Jubilee year was emphasized.

“The Most Holy Mary journeys with us as the Pilgrim of Hope, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, residential communities, and prisons,” stated Father De Lorenzo. This symbolic handover of the Madonna's effigy emphasizes the desire to involve those residing within care facilities and communities through prayer and reflection on the presence of fragility and illness.

The first stop for the pilgrimage will be at the RSA facility in Camburzano. Bishop De Lorenzo highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting, “God never abandons His children, even as they age.” This sentiment reflects Pope Francis' message from the Fourth World Day of the Elderly, which reassures the elderly of the continued mercy of God throughout their lives.

A prayer to the Madonna d’Oropa was also distributed at the event: "Holy Mother, who gave us Jesus, your Son, who died and rose for our salvation, I trust you today. You know my heart, the joys and sorrows of my life. Be with me now, especially during the most difficult times. Accept my prayers, bless and protect those who care for me and understand my fragility.”

On January 1, clown therapy group Oasi del Sorriso will visit neonatal care units to sing to the firstborn of the new year, continuing to spread joy and hope as part of their charitable endeavors.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway at the Sanctuary of Madonna della Montagna in Polsi for the traditional feast dedicated to the Virgin, drawing thousands of pilgrims over the first weekend of September. Scheduled Masses will take place throughout the day on September 1, culminating with a solemn Mass at 5:30 PM.

The celebrations, which include traditional processions, aim to unite the community through shared faith and devotion. Although logistical measures restrict vehicular access, ensuring the safety of all participants, the spirit of togetherness remains strong. The rector of the sanctuary, Don Tonino Saraco, issued an appeal for patience and cooperation from the pilgrims, emphasizing the importance of this religious event.

This year's festivities are anticipated to be especially poignant, fostering solidarity among attendees, as the Sanctuary of Polsi remains a beacon of spirituality for thousands.
