Communities Rally For Mental Health Awareness

Palm Desert hosts suicide prevention walk as Newark school celebrates kindness and mental health

On October 19, Palm Desert, California, will become the focus of compassion and hope as it hosts its annual walk for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. County officials are highlighting the importance of this event, which will take place at 9 a.m. at Civic Center Park, located at 43900 San Pablo Ave. This gathering is part of the broader Out of Darkness walks organized across Riverside County, providing a platform for community connection and support.

V. Manuel Perez, Fourth District Supervisor, expressed the significance of such events, stating, "Each life matters, and in Riverside County, we are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent the tragedy of suicide." This sentiment resonates deeply within the community as mental health issues continue to affect many individuals and families.

Before the Palm Desert walk, Riverside hosted its own suicide prevention walk on September 28. Both events are co-sponsored by the Riverside University Health System (RUHS) and the Riverside County Suicide Prevention Coalition. The Coalition, founded by the Board of Supervisors, aims to raise awareness and educate the community on suicide prevention strategies.

According to Kevin Jeffries, First District Supervisor, Riverside County has achieved notable progress, reporting a 16 percent decrease in suicide rates from 2019 to 2022. Yet, he cautioned, "Each life lost is a tragedy, and continued efforts are necessary to support those at risk." The upcoming event will not only raise awareness but also allow participants to honor lost loved ones and share their personal stories.

Universally acknowledged as powerful tools for healing, walks like these draw participants from all walks of life. They create environments for open conversation and provide educational resources and support, reinforcing the notion of community—something often desperately needed among those struggling with mental health challenges.

While the walk fosters unity, it also serves as a reminder of practitioners' dedication to mental health. It emphasizes community efforts to prevent suicide, as people come together to engage in meaningful discussions surrounding mental well-being.

For those unable to attend the event physically, there will be options for donating and fundraising. This approach enables even wider community involvement and ensures continued support for mental health resources. Additional details on registration and donations can be accessed through the Riverside University Health System’s website.

Meanwhile, away from California, the Mount CofE Primary School in Newark, England, celebrated World Mental Health Day on October 10. The school organized activities focusing on mental health awareness and kindness as a part of their annual Harvest Festival, showing how educational institutions contribute to spreading mental health messages.

Students and staff participated by wearing yellow, the designated color representing mental health awareness. Alongside this, they engaged actively with the NSPCC’s October Kindness Challenge week, showcasing their commitment to promoting kindness throughout their school community.

While supporting mental health, pupils collected donations for local food banks. This initiative was part of their Harvest Festival activities aimed at fostering community spirit. With items including canned goods and toiletries, the students embodied the spirit of generosity and support for those less fortunate.

Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Ellison, who coordinate charity events at the school remarked, "This was the perfect opportunity for our school community to come together in support of important causes, promoting mental health awareness, kindness, and generosity." Their efforts highlight the significant role schools can play in establishing dialogue around mental health and fostering supportive environments for children.

Both events, one on opposite sides of the Atlantic, reinforce the idea of collective responsibility for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. They remind communities of the importance of kindness, support, and open conversations about mental health. By joining hands, communities can create spaces where mental health is prioritized, and individuals feel empowered to share their own experiences without stigma.
