Communication Unlimited Celebrates 35 Years Of BSL Interpretation

The award-winning agency reflects on its community impact and challenges as it gears up for its milestone anniversary event.

Communication Unlimited (CU) is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary as one of the first BSL (British Sign Language) interpretation agencies, significantly impacting the deaf community across Derby and Derbyshire since its inception.

Founded in December 1989, under the leadership of CEO Alison Jones, CU has grown to not just provide interpretations but also actively participate within community projects, collaborating with organizations like University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and the Royal School for the Deaf.

"Not one day is the same here at CU," Jones said. Her role, she described, includes managing interpreter schedules, communicating with the deaf members, and network representation to advocate for the deaf community's needs. Jones, who has been with CU since 2014, emphasized the intricacies of her job, from finding funding to delivering Deaf Awareness sessions.

Jones highlighted the significant challenges faced by CU and the wider UK direct services field, particularly the increasing shortage of interpreters, which she described as among their biggest hurdles. "We need to increase the interpreter pool and work smarter," Jones stated, noting the emotional toll of the profession, especially when dealing with sensitive issues affecting clients.

Despite these challenges, CU proudly continues to be at the forefront of interpretation services, adapting quickly to meet the needs of the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. "We rose to the challenge to continue offering interpretation—including remote services—with passionate commitment," Jones recounted. During this period, CU found innovative ways to continue providing access, from assisted telecommunication via video calls to ensuring interpreters were present at medical appointments even under strict health guidelines.

CU's efforts during the pandemic were recognized with the “Derbyshire Beacon of Hope” award, illustrating their commitment to supporting the deaf community at the most challenging times. They also secured the “FSB Small Business Awards – East Midlands Winner Diversity and Inclusion Award” for their outstanding achievements during COVID-19.

Jones reminisced about some of the unique experiences her team had, including providing interpretation for royal visits and unusual situations like fire engine demonstrations. "There are times when I wish people to understand interpreters are human," Jones pointed out, emphasizing the need for preparation before assignments to help deliver quality interpretations. "Interpreters enable communication for everyone, bridging gaps between deaf and hearing communities," she added.

To celebrate CU's extensive impact and heritage, the agency is hosting a special black-tie anniversary event at the Derbyshire Cricket Ground on December 1, 2025. The celebration will feature a blue carpet entry, three-course meals, guest speakers, and fundraising activities like raffles and auctions. "It’s more than just marking the years; it’s about celebrating the community and all who have supported us on this remarkable commitment to inclusivity,” Jones stated.

Looking forward, Jones expressed aspirations for CU’s future, aiming for the agency to thrive and reach its 50th anniversary milestone. While there's much work to be done toward this goal, she remains optimistic about joining her personal wish of traveling to places like Hawaii, proving there’s always room for dreams even as she leads efforts to break barriers between the deaf and hearing communities through CU.
