BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Buffaloes secured their third straight victory with an 81-70 win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday evening at Coors Events Center. With this win, the Buffaloes improved their home record to 7-0, remaining unbeaten at home this season.
Leading the charge for Colorado was Julian Hammond III, who scored a season-high 23 points, helping to solidify the Buffaloes' dominance. The team showcased their ability to play cohesively, shooting 50% from the field (28-for-56) and achieving an impressive 18 of 19 from the free-throw line.
The game was tightly contested, with South Dakota State momentarily taking the lead 56-55 after Matthew Mors scored midway through the second half. This shift seemed to invigorate Colorado, who responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Hammond and fellow teammate Elijah Malone. This jumpstarted a pivotal 12-2 run, which allowed Colorado to seize control of the game.
Hammond was not only efficient from the field, shooting 8 of 14, but also dished out six assists throughout the game. His performance was instrumental, especially during the closing moments, as he scored eight of Colorado's final 10 points within the last 2:24 of play, ensuring the victory was well within their grasp.
While the Buffaloes excelled, South Dakota State struggled against Colorado's defensive effort. Joe Sayler came off strong for the Jackrabbits, contributing 16 points and three steals, but the team couldn't maintain momentum against the determined Buffaloes.
Oscar Cluff, South Dakota State's leading scorer coming off the bench, faced challenges and was restricted to nine points, though he did pull down nine rebounds, leadinghis team on the boards. The Jackrabbits experienced difficulties midway through the game, falling prey to Colorado's effective offense and height advantage.
Despite the defeat, South Dakota’s 77.4 points per game average this season demonstrated they had the capability to compete, yet their inability to secure key rebounds and the lack of defensive pressure against Colorado's shooting proved costly.
The matchup revealed how Colorado’s length and depth could overpower opponents. Tad Boyle's squad benefits greatly from their physicality and strategic shooting, particularly as the game progresses. They effectively neutralized South Dakota State's shots, especially beyond the arc where the Jackrabbits have traditionally found success.
With this victory, Colorado improved their record to 8-2, positioning themselves strongly early in the season. Their next games will continue to test and refine their skills as they pursue significant victories against tough conference opponents.
Meanwhile, South Dakota State fell to 8-5, marking their third loss in four games. They now need to regroup and focus on their upcoming schedule to regain momentum.
Overall, the game was a display of toughness, skill, and strategy as the Buffaloes confirmed their standing as not just strong competitors but also as serious contenders for the upcoming challenges.
