Preparations are underway for the Weiberfastnacht celebrations set to take place across Jülich and Cologne, with officials implementing stringent security measures and traffic restrictions to facilitate safe festivities. Historically known for its vibrant atmosphere, Weiberfastnacht draws thousands of participants, prompting local authorities to take precautionary actions.
During the Weiberfastnacht disco, from 10 AM to around 8 PM, the Kurfürstenstraße and upper Kölnstraße will be closed to through traffic, as stated by the City of Jülich. Similarly, parking restrictions will apply as signs will be placed prohibiting parking on both roads, ensuring unimpeded access for emergency services and the smooth flow of parade participants.
Jülich's local government has made it clear: any illegally parked vehicles during this busy period will be towed, and drivers will be responsible for all associated costs. Complicatory measures are also set during the Kengerzoch event on Tulpen Sunday, with parking bans established from 11 AM to 5 PM along the entire route.
The heightened security protocols come as the Cologne police reported possible threats based on social media calls from extremists urging violence during carnival celebrations. Authorities are taking these threats seriously, deploying over 1,500 police officers—more than on regular days—to monitor and enforce safety during the festivities. Cologne's police chief emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Every available personnel is being deployed to make sure joyful celebrations proceed without incident."
With the current surge of public incidents involving knives, strict controls will be implemented at the entrances to events—this includes thorough checks on bags and personal belongings. Any kind of knives are banned under revised weapons laws, and strategic searches will be executed throughout the city. Chief Hermanns expressed confidence about this approach, assuring the public: "Our goal is to maintain peace and security so families can enjoy their time out together."
Concerned about alcohol-related incidents, police are also wary of the potential for public drunkenness among youth and are addressing this issue proactively. Parents are encouraged to discuss safe practices with their children before the celebrations commence, reinforcing the importance of personal responsibility.
For those attending the festivities, officers recommend carrying only necessary items: identification, mobile phones, tickets, and minimal cash to limit personal loss risk. Not only does this decrease the chance of theft, but it also makes the security process more efficient for everyone.
Cologne is also providing extensive support services during the celebrations. Various women's and girls' consultation services will be accessible throughout the festivities, offering protection and advice for individuals facing any challenges. Some of these support centers include:
- Women Against Violence e.V. – Emergency call and support for assaulted women: 0221/562035; Email: [email protected]
- The Turning Point – Consultation center for women: 0221/99 56 4444, located at Danzierstr. 142a, 51063 Cologne.
- Safety Center SkF e.V. – Assistance for domestic violence: 0221/126 950.
Further efforts have been highlighted amid the arrival of the carnival season, indicating collaborations between the city's public transport agencies and local authorities. Information on safe travel for young individuals during this party time has also been shared to assist with returning home safely from upcoming celebrations.
The response to the carnival spirit has been distinctly positive, with the cities implementing added measures to fill the celebration with joy and excitement rather than fear. With proper preparation and community support, the Weiberfastnacht celebrations promise to be colorful, lively, and above all, safe.
