Colin Farrell Launches Foundation For Adults With Disabilities

Actor Colin Farrell advocates for his son and others with intellectual disabilities through new initiative.

Colin Farrell, renowned actor and father, announced the launch of the Colin Farrell Foundation, aiming to provide support for adults with intellectual disabilities like his son James, who has Angelman syndrome. The actor opened up about his experiences as he shares the motivation behind this initiative, emphasizing the need for kindness and community for individuals with such conditions.

Reflecting on his life, Farrell, 48, expressed, "It’s exciting, it feels like the right time.” He shared his desire for the world to treat his son with kindness and respect, acknowledging the extraordinary life James has led. "He works incredibly hard to achieve the benchmarks... he’s done incredible. He’s a really well-adjusted, happy young man. He’s extraordinary,” said Farrell.

Farrell revealed his biggest fear: the future of James. He voiced concerns over what might happen if he or James's mother, Kim Bordenave, were no longer around to support him. “My fear would be, God forbid, if and when something happens to James’s mother or me... he has earned the right to have... community,” he explained, reflecting on his deep wish for his son to have autonomy and support.

The foundation will provide innovative programs and advocacy to help adults like James integrate more fully and feel supported within their communities. Farrell's own experience as the father of James served as an awakening for him. He stated, “Everything is magnified when you have a child with special needs.” It was this realization, he admitted, which led him to sobriety when James was just two years old, prompting him to become the father his son deserved.

Farrell's focus on his children extends beyond concerns about their futures; his second son, Henry, age 15, also plays a significant role in his life. He remarked on the gratitude he feels, saying, “If it wasn’t for my sobriety, I wouldn’t be able to be there for James and enjoy the marvel of his life.” This acknowledgment highlights Farrell's commitment as a parent to truly engage with and cherish the lives of his children.

Nevertheless, the thought of not being there for James remains terrifying to him. He candidly shared, “It’s terrifying... I won’t be there to shepherd and protect,” speaking of the anxiety surrounding his own mortality. He emphasized the importance of helping others feel valued and engaged within their communities, not just out of superficial kindness but out of genuine desire for inclusion.

Farrell shared his aspirations for James, saying, "That’d be the dream,” envisioning for his son the opportunity to thrive, garden, swim, and find friendships. He firmly believes every individual deserves to feel wanted and connected, expressing hope for others with intellectual disabilities. The Colin Farrell Foundation serves as his promise to advocate for these needs, ensuring adults like James have the support necessary to lead fulfilling lives.
