Coleman Wong Shines At Miami Open In Stunning Upset

Hong Kong tennis prodigy defeats Ben Shelton in historic match, inspiring the next generation.

Coleman Wong, a young tennis player from Hong Kong, has emerged as a bright star in the sports world following his impressive performances at the 2025 Miami Open. The 20-year-old made headlines not just for his skills on the court, but for his inspirational journey that led him to become one of the few professional athletes from his city.

Wong’s tennis career began quite serendipitously at the tender age of five. He found himself on the court after his older sister, Elana, fell ill and could not attend a private lesson at Victoria Park, the renowned venue for the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open. Instead of letting the lesson go to waste, his parents decided that Coleman should try it, and that decision changed his life. “I really liked it,” Wong recalled in an interview with ATPTour.com. “I was a bit out of shape, I was a bit chubby, and at first it was just for keeping fit. Then, slowly, I grew.”

Fast-forward fifteen years, and Wong is now ranked No. 182 in the PIF ATP Rankings, having recently achieved two substantial victories in Miami. On March 20, 2025, he secured his first win at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament as he defeated world No. 82 Daniel Altmaier with a solid score of 6-4, 6-3. “It feels unreal. This year I've been struggling a little bit... But I'm really happy to get one of my biggest wins in my career. For me, it means a lot, and I really hope it's the first of many,” Wong expressed after the match.

Wong’s coach, James Allemby, emphasized the need for Wong to approach his next match against 13th seed Ben Shelton with precision, specifically regarding his service game. “He’s going to need to be flawless to beat Shelton,” Allemby stated in anticipation of their match scheduled for the following Saturday. Shelton, who stands imposing at 6 feet 4 inches tall and is renowned for his powerful serves exceeding 240 kilometers per hour, will undoubtedly present a challenging encounter.

Following his victory over Altmaier, Wong stepped onto the court against Shelton on March 22, 2025, in Miami. This matchup turned out to be another milestone as he triumphed in a nail-biting encounter, winning 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(5). This was not only the most significant win of his career but also a testament to his resilience and determination. He recalled the support of his family and the sacrifices they made. “They didn't have any picture of it, and they let me go,” he acknowledged about leaving for Spain when he was just 17 to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy. “I really, I really need to thank them as well. It's a big sacrifice, because I don't see them at all. I probably see them a few times a year.”

The Nadal academy has been pivotal for Wong’s development as a player, allowing him to refine his skills and even offering the unique experience of training alongside legendary players. Wong proudly mentioned training with Rafael Nadal himself on multiple occasions, drawing significant inspiration from this. “He said, ‘You're in the right path, because we have one of the best coaches’, and I believed him,” Wong recounted, reflecting upon the encouragement he received. The budding young star is keenly aware of his role as a representative of Hong Kong in international tennis and aims to inspire the next generation.

“I want them to know that Hong Kong can also have a professional tennis player,” Wong stated earnestly, hoping to dispel notions that success comes only from larger tennis markets. He expressed a desire for others in Hong Kong to believe in their potential despite their city’s relatively small size. Wong's record in 2025 includes an 11-10 win-loss ratio heading into the Miami Open, and he has already shown remarkable growth since last year when he faced an early exit in the same tournament.

As he gears up for the next stage of the tournament, Wong is fueled by an unwavering drive to improve and see how far he can elevate his game. “I like to win. I want to be the best, and I want to see what my limit is. I'm still searching for it,” he affirmed. Wong's passion for tennis extends beyond just winning; it is about challenging himself constantly and pushing the boundaries of what is achievable.

With the world watching, Coleman Wong is positioning himself not just as a player but as a symbol of hope and ambition for young athletes in Hong Kong and beyond. His journey, from a boy taking a single tennis lesson to competing at prestigious international events, showcases the incredible potential that lies in pursuing one's dreams against all odds.

As he looks to the future, Wong is determined to further cement his place in tennis history and continue filling the gap for representation from Hong Kong. With the support of his family and his relentless spirit, the journey has only just begun for this young talent, and tennis fans everywhere are eager to see what comes next.
