Cold Front Brings Mixed Weather Across Mexico

Rain, frost, and warmth expected as front No. 28 moves through the country.

On February 24, 2025, Mexico's weather will be influenced by the advancing cold front No. 28, which is expected to affect the southeast region and the Yucatán Peninsula. This system, interacting with moist air from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, will bring varying degrees of rain and chilly conditions across the nation, according to the National Meteorological Service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, SMN).

Severe rainfall is anticipated particularly for states like Chiapas, Tabasco, and Quintana Roo, where isolated heavy rains will occur. Other regions, including Oaxaca, Guerrero, and central parts of Mexico, may experience sporadic showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Potential lightning strikes may impact areas like Morelos, Michoacán, and the State of Mexico, where isolated rain showers are also predicted.

Regions such as Oaxaca and Chiapas will face heavy rain, with accumulations expected to range from 25 to 50 mm, according to the latest forecasts. Meanwhile, intervals of showers ranging from 5 to 25 mm are likely across Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Campeche, and Yucatán. Minimal rain is anticipated for Michoacán, Morelos, and the State of Mexico, contributing just 0.1 to 5 mm.

Wind conditions will also play a significant role, with gusts of up to 80 km/h expected over the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, alongside 40 to 60 km/h winds through Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. The combination of these weather factors suggests not only reduced visibility but also possible transportation disruptions, particularly around the storm-prone areas.

The colder temperatures forecasted for the north and central regions of Mexico will lead to freezing conditions. Zones within Durango are expected to experience extremely cold nights with temperatures plummeting between -15 and -10 °C. Comparatively, regions of Chihuahua might see ranges from -10 to -5 °C. Significant frost is also forecasted for areas of Sonora and Zacatecas, where minimum temperatures could hover between -5 and 0 °C.

Contrasting this chill, warmer conditions are expected on coastal areas of the Pacific, particularly regions like Sinaloa, Jalisco, and Colima, where temperatures are set to exceed 35 °C. Humidity and heat will boost temperatures to between 30 to 35 °C, especially on the southern coastal belts.

Moving to Mexico City and the State of Mexico, mornings are forecasted to be fresh, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 10 °C. The afternoons should bring warmer conditions, peaking at around 24 to 26 °C. Although the capital is unlikely to experience rainfall, isolated showers may occur closer to the mountains of Edomex.

Regions like Baja California are set to remain mostly clear, with no expected rainfall and degrees of 30 to 35 °C during the day. This is similar for the northern Pacific regions where Sinaloa and Sonora will see mild temperatures and scattered cloud coverage without rain.

The forecast extends beyond mere temperature predictions to anticipate weather conditions such as rolling fog across the plains of Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí, particularly during the early morning hours. By the afternoon, fatigue under the sun will lead to more warmth throughout the day.

Given this multifaceted weather scenario, the public is advised to remain vigilant and stay informed through official communications and weather updates. The SMN encourages people to check both their website and social media outlets for real-time information, especially on days where such dramatic shifts are expected.

The weather for February 24 is emblematic of the typical chaos seen during transitional seasons, reminding inhabitants and travelers alike to prepare adequately for the dual possibilities of frost and heat within the broader spectrum of Mexican climate.
