Cold Front 37 Brings Weather Changes Across Mexico

Strong winds and rain forecasted as temperatures drop significantly this weekend

As Mexico braces for a significant weather shift, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has issued a forecast detailing the arrival of cold front number 37, which is set to extend with stationary characteristics over the northern regions of the country on Thursday, April 3, 2025. This front, expected to interact with a height trough and a low-pressure channel, will bring a mix of weather conditions, including strong winds, rain, and even the possibility of snow in mountainous areas.

The cold front is anticipated to generate very strong to intense winds in several regions, with gusts reaching between 80 to 100 km/h. The states of Chihuahua and Durango have been warned to expect dust devils as a result of these conditions. Alongside these winds, showers and localized heavy rains are predicted, particularly in Coahuila, where rainfall could reach between 25 to 50 mm. Areas in Baja California, Sonora, and Chihuahua may also see snow or sleet as temperatures drop significantly.

According to the SMN, the cold front will be reinforced by a mass of cold air moving across the northeast of Mexico. This interaction will not only strengthen the winds but also maintain the potential for snow or sleet in mountainous regions during the early days of April. The National Water Commission (Conagua) has highlighted that by Saturday, April 5, these weather patterns will intensify, leading to further precipitation and cooler temperatures across the affected states.

In addition to the cold front, a low-pressure channel in the eastern and southeastern parts of Mexico will contribute to isolated rains in states such as Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Quintana Roo. Strong gusts of wind are also expected in the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, further complicating the weather landscape.

While the cold front brings much-needed relief from the recent heat wave that has plagued the country, it also presents challenges. The heat wave has seen temperatures soar to as high as 45 degrees Celsius in northeastern Mexico, particularly in Tamaulipas, where residents have endured muggy conditions. As the cold front approaches, Protección Civil Tamaulipas has reported that light drizzles and scattered rains could be expected from Saturday through Sunday, with maximum temperatures dropping to around 25 degrees Celsius.

For the upcoming week, temperatures are forecasted to fluctuate significantly. On Monday, April 7, the northern regions could see minimum temperatures between 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, while the central region might experience lows of 10 to 14 degrees Celsius. The southern areas are expected to have slightly warmer conditions, with minimums ranging from 14 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Despite the cold front bringing cooler weather, the heat wave will persist until Sunday, April 6, when it is expected to dissipate, leading to a more regulated climate across Mexico. However, in the state of Jalisco, temperatures could still remain above 35 degrees Celsius, while mountainous areas may experience overnight lows of -5 to 0 degrees Celsius.

As citizens prepare for this shift in weather, authorities are urging residents to stay informed about the evolving conditions. The SMN and Protección Civil agencies are continuously monitoring the situation and providing updates to ensure public safety.

In summary, the arrival of cold front number 37 marks a notable change in Mexico's weather pattern. With strong winds, potential snowfall, and a drop in temperatures, residents across the northern and northeastern regions should remain vigilant and prepared for the upcoming conditions. As the country transitions from a heat wave to colder weather, this front serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of Mexico's climate.
