Cold Air Mass Set To Chill Northern Vietnam

Residents prepare for expected downpours and significant temperature drops starting March 15.

A significant cold air mass is set to influence weather patterns across northern and central Vietnam from the evening of March 15 to March 16, 2025. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, residents will experience cloud cover and the potential for rain and thunderstorms as the temperature drops.

North Vietnam is bracing for the cold, with local forecasts predicting chilly nights and early mornings. The cold air mass is expected to reach the Northeast region, impacting areas like Hanoi and surrounding provinces. For Hanoi, the temperature is expected to fall between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius on the night of March 15, transitioning to between 20 and 22 degrees during the day on March 16.

Reporters from the forecasting center indicate, "The weather turns cold, mountainous areas are very cold, with some temperatures below 10 degrees." This dramatic shift is anticipated as cold fronts strengthen, leading to northeast winds rising to level 3, and even gusts reaching up to level 6 along coastal regions.

Forecasts for other areas indicate noteworthy weather changes as well. For example, the Northwest region is poised to receive scattered showers and potential thunderstorms through March 16, with temperatures dropping to between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius and isolated areas expected to dip below this threshold. A similar pattern will emerge throughout the Northeast, where cloudiness will be prominent along with expected rainfall. Here, the temperature range could be between 15 to 18 degrees, with mountainous regions potentially experiencing temperatures below 13 degrees.

Rainfall, scattered showers, and thunderstorms are also anticipated for the North Central region, particularly from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue, where temperatures are suggested to range from 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. With the lowest temperatures expected around 14 to 17 degrees, local residents are advised to prepare for wet conditions as they navigate through potential thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, along coastal areas, seas will become increasingly tumultuous. Forecasts predict rising wind levels, reaching level 6-7, along with gusts hitting level 8-9 along the northern coast. Waves could rise as high as 2-5 meters, raising concerns for maritime safety and coastal residents alike.

Warnings for severe weather conditions will continue as reports detail the likelihood of intense rain, localized thunderstorms, and risks associated with extreme weather. "There is potential for tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms," highlighted by the forecasting agency, urging individuals to remain vigilant.

The Central and South Central regions will also be affected by this cold wave as it travels south, with rainfall expected from March 16. Affected areas will include Quang Binh to Khanh Hoa, where scattered showers and thunderstorms may occur. The temperatures here are expected to hover between 17 and 19 degrees during this period.

For the remaining regions, such as Da Nang to Binh Thuan and Southern Vietnam, weather patterns show mixed conditions with afternoon sun, becoming cloudy with rain later. The Southern area will register temperatures between 23-35 degrees Celsius, with strong chances of rainfall and thunderstorms expected.

Overall, as Vietnam heads through this transitional period, the changing climates due to the advancing cold air mass from the north will require residents to prepare adequately. Weather experts strongly recommend packing appropriately for colder weather, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.

Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates and exercise caution during potential thunderstorms and strong winds to navigate safely through these weather transitions.
