COEUR D'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Police Department is currently investigating an unusual incident involving a 16-year-old girl and a man dressed as a snowman, reported at The Shops in downtown Coeur d’Alene.
On December 19, 2024, police responded to reports of battery after the teenager interacted with the snowman mascot, who is employed by Lake CDA Cruise. The incident began when the young girl, accompanied by her friends, encountered the snowman. According to the victim, she has a severe fear of mascots and became visibly distressed as the snowman approached her with open arms.
Despite her backing up against the wall and shaking her head, the snowman hugged her. Horrified, the girl’s friends fled the scene, exacerbated by the awkwardness of the situation. During the commotion, one of the victim’s friends tripped and hit her head, leading to medical personnel being called on site to evaluate her. Luckily, she was treated and released without needing additional medical attention.
Coeur d'Alene police, led by spokesman Jared Reneau, confirmed they reviewed the incident through surveillance footage, which showed the snowman interacting with numerous patrons before engaging with the victim. These earlier interactions included posing for pictures and enjoying friendly exchanges with both children and adults, which appeared entirely harmless.
The girl’s parents were contacted by authorities after the incident but expressed uncertainty about whether they would like to pursue charges of battery against the employee dressed as the snowman. Officers identified and interviewed the man on-site as part of standard procedure, preparing for any potential legal action should the family decide to move forward.
"The snowman hugged her," noted Officer Reneau, emphasizing how the act triggered the teenager’s fear. "She has an intense fear of mascots and was immediately afraid as the snowman began walking toward her with open arms."
Authorities have reassured the public, stating there is no active threat to the community linked to this incident. The investigation remains open as police continue to monitor how the situation develops.
